"Les Revenants" rammenda le vite di chi è rimasto vivo

"Tutto inizia da una teca entomologica che va in frantumi e da una farfalla che prende il volo: la morte si rianima. La normalità di un paesino di montagna nel cuore della Francia, dominato da una diga gigantesca, è scossa il giorno in cui un pullman con a bordo 40 ragazzini precipita in un burrone: le famiglie colpite dal lutto sono sconvolte, cercano faticosamente di suturare la ferita che ha lacerato i loro animi. Un bel giorno, però, Camille, una delle ragazze del torpedone, torna a casa. E con lei altri morti. Hanno smarrito la nozione di tempo perché loro, fisicamente, non sono invecchiati, non sanno di tornare dalla terra desolata. Ideata da Fabrice Gobert, scritta da Gobert, Fabien Adda e Emmanuel Carrère (L’avversario, Limonov , La settimana bianca ), la serie francese «Les Revenants» è un adattamento dell’omonimo film Quelli che ritornano di Robin Campillo del 2004 (Sky Atlantic, mercoledì, 21.10; prima stagione 8 puntate). Sbaglierebbe chi pensasse all’ennesima riproposta degli zombi. I morti che tornano in vita non fanno altro che lacerare o rammendare le esistenze di chi è rimasto. La straordinarietà della situazione nasce proprio dall’eccesso di realismo, dalle minuzie, dai dettagli, dalle introspezioni con cui viene raccontata la storia. Come se la morte non fosse altro che l’incontro spietato con se stessi. Come se i morti non fossero altro che vivi, appartati in qualche recesso, per minare le nostre certezze. «Les Revenants» è opera di grande spessore, diretta e interpretata con invidiabile professionalità, che intreccia una furia complessa (la resurrezione è sconvolgimento) a un pacato ritratto provinciale, colto nella sua miseria e nella sua grandezza". (ANSA) - WASHINGTON - Mister 'Big' prende le distanze da 'Sex and the City'. Anni dopo la fine delle riprese della celebre serie televisiva, e dai due film, l'attore Chris Noth che ha interpretato l'unico vero amore della protagonista Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), torna a parlare della storia tormentata tra i due, senza risparmiare critiche. "Una delle cose che dico ai fan e' che non ho mai preteso di essere quello che non sono. Era Carrie che cercava di far finta di essere quella che non era. Lui, 'Big', e' sempre stato onesto, non l'ha mai tradita", ha detto Noth, 59 anni, al sito Australia News.com. "Il rapporto semplicemente non ha funzionato e lui si e' sposato. Quanti fidanzati ha invece avuto Carrie? Era proprio una p...!", ha aggiunto. "C'e' sempre stato un equivoco e cioe' che lei era una sua vittima. Non e' cosi' - ha aggiunto Noth -. Carrie era una donna intelligente e forte". Noth, il cui personaggio finisce per sposare Carrie nel primo film dopo la fine della serie, ha ammesso che sta cercando di far 'plasmare' il nuovo personaggio che interpreta nella serie tv, 'The Good wife'. L'attore ha poi cercato di spiegare cosa sia andato storto con il secondo film sulla serie che non ha avuto molto successo di pubblico e critica. "Sono stati avidi, volevano far soldi e non ci sono riusciti. Credo perche' il film fosse uscito proprio nel mezzo della recessione. Il pubblico non ha gradito che le quattro protagoniste andassero a Dubai, mentre in Usa si affrontava il problema di come pagare il mutuo della casa". "Credo anche - ha aggiunto - che lasciare New York, per ambientare il film a Dubai, sia stato un errore perche' la citta' e' una parte integrante dello show".

With the way that Ebola is dominating headlines right now – despite Shep Smith’s best and most rational efforts – it would have been more surprising if nobody tried to fictionalize it. It is instead Fox TV Studios that will be developing a series based on the work of author Richard Preston with producers Ridley Scott and Lynda Obst. The duo originally wanted to turn Preston’s bestselling book, “The Hot Zone,” into a feature film starring Jodie Foster 20 years ago, but the project obviously didn’t pan out.
The resurgence of Ebola, and especially the reported cases in the United States, has made the topic more relevant than ever, which is why Scott and Obst are back at work.

“I think it’s the speed with which it kills that makes the disease so frightening,” Obst tells The Hollywood Reporter. “People hoped it would stay in some remote part of the world. But that’s a fantasy in the modern world. The modern world makes us one big connected family.”

In regard to just the first chapter of “The Hot Zone,” Stephen King called it “one of the most horrifying things I’ve read in my whole life – and then it gets worse. That’s what I keep marveling over: it keeps getting worse. What a remarkable piece of work.” Keep in mind that it is a non-fiction thriller. Preston’s work in writing about Ebola isn’t limited to “The Hot Zone,” which examined the origins of this disease and similar viruses. In an article in the New Yorker last month, Preston recapped the “explosive” emergence of Ebola in West Africa, and that information will be included in the series, as will a piece that he has written for next week’s New Yorker that will cover the latest cases in the U.S.
Preston also conducted an AMA on Reddit for his August article in the New Yorker, and he answered a number of questions regarding everything from the experimental serum ZMAPP…

The antibody serum ZMAPP seems to be amazingly effective but we don’t know because it’s only been tried on the two patients. As for aftereffects, i interviewed Dr. Shem Musoke who nearly died of Marburg (close cousin of Ebola) and he told me it took him about a year to recover fully but now he was fine. It’s a crushing disease but if you survive you do recover.

They haven’t been able to fully protect themselves, doctors and nurses are dying. They’re wearing full protection biohazard suits, but the Ebola wards are just horrifying, 30 Ebola patients with one doctor and one nurse, both in space suits. Conditions are awful in those wards, we need more doctors and nurses – not even a space suit can totally protect you if the ward is really a mess.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Preston has been working with Scott and Obst in the development of this limited series.

Dai mulini olandesi al “Moulin Rouge”, inteso come film simbolo del cineasta fantasioso Baz Luhrmann che l’ha voluto quale protagonista maschile del mini-film di Chanel che da qualche giorno impazza in ogni dove. Michiel Huisman, nato tra i tulipani di Amstelveen, sarà il volto nuovo che affianca la protagonista Tatiana Maslany nella 2° stagione inedita della serie cult “Orphan Black” (su Premium Action dal 15 novembre). Nel frattempo si è concesso il lusso di essere colui che fa battere il cuore alla surfista chic Gisele Bündchen nello spot diretto con maestria da Luhrmann e che racchiude le atmosfere dei suoi più famosi “Moulin Rouge” e “Il Grande Gatsby”. Huisman si è fatto conoscere di recente in tv per aver partecipato a “Nashville” (Fox Life) e “Game of Thrones” (Rai4/Sky Atlantic), mentre al cinema è stato sul set di “Black Book” e “World War Z”. Il grande schermo sembra essersi innamorato del fascino (olandese?) di Michiel, visto che da qui al 2016 è atteso in ben 5 pellicole. In “Wild”, in uscita in Italia il 5 dicembre, affianca Reese Witherspoon; in “American Dream” (attualmente in post-produzione) è davanti alla cinepresa del polacco Janusz Kaminski, il direttore della fotografia preferito di Steven Spielberg; nel 2015 usciranno il thriller paranoico “The Invitation” e “The Age of Adaline” con Harrison Ford e Blake Lively; il 2016 vedrà Huisman protagonista di “The Swimmer”, storia di un nuotatore che sfida le difficili acque di un fiume danese. Se nel poco tempo libero scrive e compone canzoni (per i feticisti del caso, ha già pubblicato un album in olandese), i giornali glam hanno iniziato a cercarlo come modello (vedi la cover di “L’Officiel” QUI). Nel frattempo non resta che seguirlo in tv, tra un chan(n)el e l’altro…

La corsa di Netflix non è finita: partito negli Stati Uniti, il servizio che fornisce video online in abbonamento continua a fare rotta sull’Europa e si prepara a fissare la sua bandierina sui Paesi dell’Estremo Oriente. La società, già presente in Gran Bretagna, Paesi Bassi e Scandinavia, a settembre è sbarcata anche in Francia, Germania, Austria e Svizzera. All’appello manca l’Italia, ma il gruppo con sede a Los Gatos, California, sta accelerando: sul sito ufficiale, infatti, è comparso un annuncio per la ricerca di “language specialist” nel nostro Paese. Si tratta di traduttori che hanno il compito di riadattare i film e le serie tv distribuite dal portale, che dal prossimo anno inizierà anche a produrre lungometraggi. Posizioni aperte anche per Spagna, Polonia, Ungheria, Vietnam, Giappone e nell’area araba. La data da cerchiare in rosso non c’è ancora, ma secondo quanto anticipato a inizio settembre da “La Stampa” il colosso dello streaming, che ha oltre 50 milioni di abbonati di cui circa 35 milioni solo negli Usa, dovrebbe presentarsi agli utenti italiani nel 2015, e starebbe lavorando a un’alleanza con Telecom. Restano da sciogliere alcuni nodi: uno è legato all’acquisizione dei diritti sul mercato italiano, particolarmente affollato. Per far breccia nel pubblico di massa, poco avvezzo a guardare film e serie in lingua originale con i sottotitoli, occorrerà inoltre un solido pacchetto di opere doppiate, che richiede un investimento maggiore. Nonostante le rassicurazioni, anche quello della Banda Larga rimane un capitolo complesso: secondo uno studio della “Lombardia Film Commission”, infatti, solo il 55% delle abitazioni nazionali dispone di collegamenti teoricamente adeguati a supportare il carico necessario per fruire di Netflix. La media europea, in base alle rilevazioni Eurostat, è del 72%.

Si tratta, in ogni caso, di dossier che i manager di Reed Hasting, cinquantaquattrenne Ceo di Netflix, stanno studiando da tempo. Prima di uscire dai confini americani la società ha riflettuto a lungo, e finora non ha sbagliato una mossa: per Hasting il duro («Ha un quoziente intellettivo pari a zero, ma è l’amministratore delegato più brillante che abbia mai incontrato», racconta, perfida, la biografa Gina Keating) parlano i numeri. Il gruppo, infatti, ha chiuso il secondo trimestre del 2014 con un utile netto di 71 milioni di dollari a fronte dei 29,5 milioni dello stesso periodo dell’anno scorso.

"The Walking Dead", gli zombi delle nostre ossessioni

"«Il mondo sta per finire. La sola ragione per cui potrebbe durare è che esiste». Questa di Charles Baudelaire, in «Razzi», potrebbe essere la perfetta epigrafe di «The Walking Dead», di cui è appena iniziata la quinta stagione (su Fox, lunedì, ore 21, a pochissima distanza dalla trasmissione negli Usa). Più passano le stagioni e più è evidente che il racconto dell’invasione zombie seguita alla diffusione di un misterioso virus, capace di far risvegliare i morti trasformandoli in aggressive creature affamate di carne viva e private di ogni barlume di umanità, non ha solo un’anima horror ma ci parla di molte ossessioni della contemporaneità. In controluce filtrano alcuni dei temi più pressanti dell’agenda internazionale (le armi batteriologiche, la diffusione di grandi epidemie, la brutalità dei tagliagole), ma anche riflessioni profondamente alate: l’apocalisse è una condizione causata dall’uomo stesso, che sfrutta le risorse del pianeta in modo sconsiderato, portandolo verso un inevitabile collasso. L’avvio della quinta stagione è stato maestoso nella sua brutalità: abbiamo ritrovato il piccolo drappello di sopravvissuti guidati dallo sceriffo Rick Grimes dove l’avevamo lasciato, imprigionato a Terminus, un luogo inizialmente scambiato per un santuario e un rifugio protetto, ma presto rivelatosi come una trappola spaventosa. Nella serie le scene d’azione e gli effetti speciali sono altamente spettacolari, ma l’attenzione è tutta per le relazioni tra i vari personaggi di un cast molto corale: la sfida più importante della quinta stagione sarà quella di descrivere l’evoluzione interiore del leader Rick, un «buono» costretto a fare i conti con un mondo alla deriva". NEWS - Tutto torna, anche i morti! Da stasera su Sky Atlantic la serie francese "Les Revenants", sorta di "j'adore dell'aldilà"
(ANSA) - ROMA - Un universo fatto di suspense, di fiction, di fantasia. Che parla di amore e di morte. Che si interroga sul concetto di comunita' e sul destino del mondo. Sulle esperienze piu' intime. E' cinema di genere rivisitato da un autore. In un paese di montagna nel cuore delle alpi Francesi, dominato da una diga gigantesca, lo stesso giorno, svariate persone di eta' e status differenti, visibilmente disorientate, cercano di tornare nelle proprie case. Non sanno che sono morte gia' da qualche anno, che non sono invecchiate e che nessuno le aspetta. Da stasera arriva in esclusiva alle 21.10 su Sky Atlantic HD Les Revenants, la serie tv francese acclamata in tutto il mondo e vincitrice di numerosi premi nazionali e agli Emmy Awards 2013 come Miglior serie tv drammatica. Ideata da Fabrice Gobert, e' un adattamento dell'omonimo film Quelli che ritornano di Robin Campillo del 2004 (ha richiesto cinque anni di realizzazione, ottenendo l'interesse delle grandi case di distribuzione internazionali). Dopo il successo internazionale della serie, e' ora in lavorazione il remake americano: a curare il rifacimento saranno Carlton Cuse (Bates Motel) e Raelle Tucker (True Blood). Tra i protagonisti di Les Revenants, Camille, un'adolescente morta in un incidente d'autobus durante una gita scolastica; Simon, un giovane deceduto il giorno del suo matrimonio; Victor, un bambino che non parla con un passato oscuro e tanti altri parteciperanno a questa misteriosa riapparizione. Determinate a riprendersi un posto che non esiste piu', le persone che erano scomparse scoprono a poco a poco di non essere gli unici redivivi e che il loro ritorno si accompagna a strani eventi sempre piu' frequenti. Forse e' l'inizio di uno sconvolgimento ancora piu' importante. Nelle note di produzione Caroline Benjo e Jimmy Desmarais spiegano: "Les Revenants era un progetto di un'altra ampiezza, ma i produttori avevano ben compreso che Fabrice (Gobert) avrebbe saputo dare una grande originalita' a delle situazioni quotidiane. La parola "realismo" tornava spesso nel corso delle discussioni e, riferita a un mondo in cui i morti non sono definitivamente tali, poteva sembrare paradossale. Questa parola traduceva le preoccupazioni di Fabrice e dei produttori di rendere il mondo della serie sufficientemente credibile, per quanto possibile che noi, spettatori, credessimo al ritorno in vita di Camille, Victor, Simon. La scommessa e' stata vinta: superato questo punto di partenza, sono stati sviluppati gli intrighi attorno ai personaggi principali. Fabrice ci ha sorpresi, episodio dopo episodio, per la ricchezza di situazioni che ha saputo esplorare, dal respiro che ha dato quel carattere alla serie e quel ritmo con cui essa si avvia verso l'ultimo episodio. Le sorelle gemelle di nuovo riunite, la giovane fidanzata tornata dall'oltretomba, il bambino che non parla piu', il prete che ha abbandonato l'abito talare, l'uomo innamorato e inquieto, l'assassino, quel paesino isolato tra le montagne, quel lago, quella foresta, e altrettanti personaggi, ambientazioni e  tematiche che fanno la ricchezza dell'universo di Les Revenants". "Fabrice Gobert e Fre'de'ric Mermoud - concludono - hanno messo in scena brillantemente gli 8 episodi della prima stagione, creando con Patrick Blossier un universo visivo forte e sorprendente, completato dalla magnifica colonna sonora originale firmata da Mogwai".

The news this week that Twin Peaks, the cult television phenomenon from 25 years ago, will be returning with a nine-episode series on Showtime in 2016, got me thinking about its long and mysterious legacy, especially as it relates to fashion. When it first aired, the show happened to capture the essence of American style as it transitioned from preppy mall clothes and twinsets of the 1980s to more regional grunge and disaffected posing of the Pacific Northwest of the 1990s, just as major changes in technology and communication were beginning to take shape.
For designers, Twin Peaks represented a lost moment. I would not call it a moment of innocence, given the bizarre and sometimes terrifying subject matter of the series, but one before things became so complicated by business demands, information overload and the conquest of instantaneity over suspense. Besides, David Lynch’s vision for the show was so visually arresting that it remains a fashion touchstone, one that has made countless reappearances in collections as sometimes shockingly literal inspiration.

In 2005, more than a decade after the show’s original two-season run and a subsequent movie, Veronique Branquinho, now one of the major stars of Belgian fashion, made one of her first presentations at the Pitti Immagine fashion fair in Florence, Italy, in a set that was inspired by the creepy “red room” from the show. The men’s wear collection, shown on everyday men rather than models, nodded to lumberjacks and hunters, along with duffels and brown and burgundy tuxedos that recreated looks and characters from the memorable dream sequences, a show dug up from the archives this week by the deep memory of the British journalist Charlie Porter.
“I thought the atmosphere in Twin Peaks was the right mood to have in the performance,” Branquinho said at the time in a video interview. “It’s the perfect match for what I wanted to do.”
I’ve seen characters from Twin Peaks on so many designer mood boards and in magazine editorials over the years that it’s hard to remember them all. Camilla Staerk, a Danish designer who came to New York in 2006, showed a first collection here that was inspired by Laura Palmer and Donna Hayward. Odilon, a collection designed by Stacey Clark, had a hit in 2012 with sweaters that carried a message from the show: “The owls are not what they seem” (pictured, above left). And the Kenzo designers, in their fall collection this year, collaborated with David Lynch on their show, prompting numerous references to his work, such as Twin Peaks ponytails on the models, created by the hairstylist Anthony Turner.

There have also been more literal translations of fashion from the series, particularly in Europe, where the Spanish label TitisClothing that dedicated its fall collection to the quirkier aspects of the show (including a model carrying a log, after the “log lady”), and, naturally, in Japan, where the label Black Weirdos is selling a “Killer Bob” parka. NEWS - Quando Batman portava i pantaloni corti...Al via da domenica l'atteso "Gotham", in volo cross-casting da Italia 1 a Premium Action con una Bat-fune!

Anche Batman è stato ragazzo. Ha vissuto un’adolescenza fortunata, racchiusa nelle pareti dorate della famiglia Wayne. Fino al giorno in cui i genitori sono stati uccisi e il suo destino è diventato quello di battersi per la giustizia nei panni del Cavaliere Oscuro. Arriva finalmente in Italia la serie più attesa dell’anno, capostipite di una “new wave” di serie tv ispirate ai fumetti che invaderanno il piccolo schermo nella nuova stagione. “Gotham”, il serial che racconta le origini dell’Uomo Pipistrello, parte su Italia 1 domenica 12 ottobre in prima serata con i primi due episodi in anteprima, per poi passare su Premium Action dal 20 ottobre, ogni lunedì sempre in prima serata. E’ la prima volta che una serie tv viene trasmessa in “cross-casting” da un canale free a uno pay. In coincidenza con i 75 anni di “Batman”, “Gotham” è la pù grande scommessa televisiva d’Oltreoceano degli ultimi anni. Per diversi motivi. 
Travalica il fumetto della DC Comics apparso per la prima volta nel 1939 squarciando le tenebre della metropoli del titolo - la più famosa dell’immaginario a strisce - che hanno avvolto le origini dei personaggi.
Manda in soffitta la storica serie tv del 1966 dove, come scrisse “Tv Guide”, “il super-eroe protagonista e i suoi antagonisti sfoggiano tutine talmente variopinte che le scorgeresti in una notte di nebbia fitta senza luna”. 
Prende il testimone dalla recente saga cinematografica di successo di Christopher Nolan, adottando effetti molto speciali e portando alla ribalta la figura secondaria, nei fumetti, del detective James Gordon, interpretato su grande schermo da Gary Oldman nella sua fase adulta. 
Non per niente è stata definita dalla prestigiosa Television Critics Association “the most promising new series of the upcoming season” e dal prestigioso “Hollywood Reporter” quale “the highly anticipated tv show of the season”. Tanto per dire, ancor prima di partire in America, il telefilm si è aggiudicato l’influente Critics Choice Television Award quale “most exciting new series”.  

A Gotham City il giovane detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) viene incaricato dell’omicidio più sconvolgente avvenuto nella metropoli, ovvero l’assassinio di Thomas e Martha Wayne sotto gli occhi del figlio Bruce (David Mazouz). E’ con quest’ultimo che Gordon intreccia un legame che condurrà alla scoperta del killer, non prima di venire in contatto con il sottobosco in fermento della città dalle lunghe ombre: la boss Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith); Oswald Cobblepot, futuro “Pinguino” (Robin Lord Taylor); Selina Kyle, destinata a diventare “Catwoman” (Camren Bicondova); il giovane Enigmista, alias dottor Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith); la futura Poison Ivy ancora sotto le spoglie di Ivy Pepper (Clare Foley). Non mancheranno le prime malefatte di Joker (il personaggio più avvolto nel mistero dalla produzione con l’intento di creare l’attesa) e la presenza del maggiordomo Alfred (Sean Pertwee), colui alla quale viene affidata la tutela del giovane orfano Bruce Wayne, prossimo Cavaliere Oscuro. Completano il quadro, il capitano della polizia Sarah Essen (Zabryna Guevara) e il detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), partner d’indagini di Gordon. 
La serie verrà trasmessa su Premium Action in accoppiata, dal 20 ottobre, con un altro titolo cult dei fumetti quale “Arrow”, giunto alla 3° stagione inedita e ad oggi il telefilm più visto in Italia negli ultimi anni (al suo passaggio su Italia 1 ha superato quota 3 milioni e mezzo di spettatori). Sempre Premium Action farà tris nel marzo 2015 con l’arrivo di “The Flash” (anch’esso tratto da un fumetto della DC Comics), atteso spin-off di “Arrow” con al centro il super-eroe più veloce dell’universo. 

La serie firmata da Bruno Heller, ideatore di “The Mentalist”, è stata lanciata con il claim ad effetto “The Good. The Evil. The Beginning”. Il protagonista di “Gotham”, è rimasto ferito sul set. Benjamin McKenzie, già front-man del cult generazionale “The OC”, si è ferito sulla fronte nel corso delle riprese durante le quali, lo stesso McKenzie, ha rifiutato la controfigura. Le immagini della ferita e del ricovero le ha postate lo stesso attore su Instagram. McKenzie ha commentato con la seguente didascalia le foto: “Una sequenza di combattimento andata male! Un cavolo di muro troppo vero, Batman!”. Il caso vuole che l’incidente sia avvenuto il giorno del compleanno dell’interprete messosi in evidenza anche nella serie poliziesca “Southland”.

Next weekend, the cast and crew of Daredevil are taking over New York Comic-Con. It’ll be the first time they face the public and answer questions about the highly anticipated show, which will hit Netflix in 2015. To commemmorate the occasion, Marvel revealed a bunch of information about the appearance, along with the show’s official logo. It’s a little more sleek and modernized from the one you’re used to. "True Detective": oltre la serie, un evento mentale
"«It's not TV, it's HBO». Ancora una volta il marchio della più conosciuta tv via cavo non tradisce e «True Detective» ha tutti i caratteri di ciò che si manifesta innanzitutto come evento mentale, non importa se libro o film o serie tv. Di solito, il crime tenta di spingere lo spettatore in un mondo snebbiato in cui gli accertamenti diventano, insieme, prove inconfutabili e riparazioni; qui succede il contrario. I delitti del temibile serial killer sono secondari di fronte a un'altra indagine introspettiva ben più profonda: i due detective si interrogano a vicenda, lottando contro i loro demoni. Alla fine il mistero non riguarda l'assassino ma chi gli dà la caccia (Sky Atlantic, venerdì, 21.10). I due detective Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) e Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) vengono richiamati dalla squadra omicidi della Louisiana nel 2012 per un caso che avevano affrontato nel 1995: si tratta di dare la caccia a un killer seriale che uccide giovani donne con rituali satanici. Questo sbalzo temporale imprime un formidabile andamento narrativo che ci permette di entrare nella vita dei due poliziotti attraverso lo schema classico della costruzione in abisso; l'uno, Martin, più pragmatico (ma anche lui ha i suoi bei fantasmi, a cominciare dal bere) e l'altro, Rust, un pessimista cosmico che «poteva litigare con il cielo se non gli piaceva il tono di blu». La serie è stata scritta da Nic Pizzolato, che ha curato scene e dialoghi; non di rado nella sceneggiatura c'è compiacimento letterario e pretenziosità. La regia dei primi otto episodi è di Cary Fukunaga. In America si lavora già alla seconda stagione. “Twin Peaks,” the ABC series that was a forerunner of today’s offbeat serialized cable dramas, is coming back to life with nine new episodes to air on Showtime in 2016.
Series creators David Lynch and Mark Frost are working away on the scripts, with Lynch planning to direct all nine episodes. The episodes are expected to bow in early 2016, which would coincide with the 25th anniversary of the show’s demise after two seasons on ABC in 1990 and 1991.
The new segs will be set in the present day and continue storylines established in the second season. Frost emphasized that the new episodes will not be a remake or reboot but will reflect the passage of time since viewers last checked in with key characters. As part of the deal, Showtime will rerun episodes from the original series’ first two seasons leading up to the 2016 premiere.
Frost would not elaborate on plot details or even the characters that will come into play. But the story threads that will picked up were “baked in to the last episode,” Frost told Variety. He called it “the next chapter of the story” and said that the passage of 25 years will be an important element in the plot.

“For those followers of the show who felt bereft when the show ended where it did all those years ago are going to like where it goes from here,” Frost assured. “And we hope that a lot of people who haven’t been to Twin Peaks yet are going to be equally interested in where the story goes from where we left off.”
“Twin Peaks” was ahead of its time in its unusual, often surreal approach to telling the yarn of a murder mystery in a fictional small town in Washington state. The show bowed with a ton of buzz — Lynch was red-hot as a feature helmer at the time — but it had little in the way of a sustained audience by broadcast TV standards of the day.
The series has remained a cult favorite over the years and thus was a ripe candidate for revival amid the general mania in the TV biz for reinventing vintage film and TV titles.
Lynch and Frost have retained ownership of “Twin Peaks” all these years. CBS has distribution rights to the show through the deficit-financing pact that Lynch/Frost Prods. set back in the day with Aaron Spelling’s Worldvision distribution arm, which CBS now controls.
Another key connection that helped the new-model “Twin Peaks” land at Showtime is the pay cabler’s Gary Levine, exec VP of original programming, who was the ABC exec who developed and championed the show during its original run.

Lynch and Frost have talked about taking another run at the Twin Peaks world over the years, but the effort got serious about three years ago when the two had one of their semi-regular lunches at Hollywood’s Musso and Frank Grill. It was not lost on either of them that “Twin Peaks” had proved to be a TV pioneer in many respects. Aspects of the show that were seen as a handicap in the ABC days are now pillars of the contempo generation of edgy cable and pay cable series.
“I always felt that in ‘Twin Peaks’ we were more or less filming a novel — drilling down to a level of detail you weren’t used to seeing in network storytelling,” Frost said. “Over the years a lot of people have credited us with inspiring them to think differently in how to tell stories. Now that we’re doing (the show) again, I’m happy to come back and get in on the action.”

Lynch and Frost didn’t shop the series around. Showtime was a natural home because of the latitude offered by pay cable, plus the comfort level offered by the connection with Levine.
“Showtime was the place we felt most comfortable going to after meeting with Gary and (Showtime prexy) David Nevins and seeing their passion for the show,” Frost said. “Gary we consider a good friend and David I’ve known for quite a while.”
There’s no word yet about casting. In the original series, Kyle MacLachlan played the pivotal role of the Agent Dale Cooper, the FBI agent who comes to the small town to investigate the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer.
After that mystery was solved, the show explored even more seamy goings-on and oddball characters in the town. The pilot for the original series was shot on location in Washington state, but subsequent episodes were primarily lensed on stages in the San Fernando Valley. There’s no decision yet on a shooting location for the new segs.
Frost said it was still to be determined whether the revival will be a one-time limited series or an ongoing effort.
“The proof will be in the pudding. If we have a great time doing it and everybody loves it and they decide there’s room for more, I could see it going that way,” he said. The original “Twin Peaks” premiered on April 8, 1990, and had its last original telecast in June 1991. A prequel story, “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me,” was released as a feature by New Line in 1992.

The TV series has endured for a new generation of fans through periodic homevid releases and more recently, a streaming pact with Netflix. The AFI hosted a tribute to the show in Los Angeles in July in connection with the Blu-ray/DVD release “Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery.”
Given the show’s legacy and the rabid fandom it has inspired, Frost admitted that he and Lynch feel the pressure to make the new episodes worthy additions to the canon.
“We can’t rest on our laurels,” he said, which is a key reason why Lynch has committed to directing all nine hours.
“This show is a kind of thanks to all of the incredibly passionate fans we’ve had over the years that have kept the show alive and passed it down to the next generation,” Frost said. “We’ve been lucky enough to have one of the coolest, most intelligent, most inquisitive group of people attracted to our show. We’re happy for them that the show is coming back.”
In a statement issued by Showtime, Lynch and Frost quipped: “The mysterious and special world of Twin Peaks is pulling us back. We’re very excited. May the forest be with you.”

What, you don’t know the Baywatch theme song by heart? Well, I guess you weren’t a masturbatory adolescent boy in the days before the internet. And now Paramount is trying to capitalize on the fact that idiots like me remember the Baywatch theme like it was our college fight song by making a feature adaptation. Oh, and it’s going to star Dwayne The Rock Johnson.

Paramount is moving forward with its big-screen adaptation of Baywatch and has loosely attached Dwayne Johnson for beach patrol duties. The studio also has hired Justin Malen to rewrite and has attached the hot comedy writing team of Sean Anders and John Morris (We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses 2) to direct.
Johnson has long been rumored to head up a Baywatch movie, and the oft-shirtless star would seem a perfect fit for the action film that takes place along the perilous shores of Santa Monica.

Oh, like all it takes to be in Baywatch is the ability to look good shirtless? How DARE you. Somewhere David Hasselhoff is drunkenly eating a hamburger off the floor. The Hollywood Reporter actually got through this entire article without mentioning Hasselhoff once, which has to be a real kick to the groin for the guy who once tore down the Berlin Wall.

At one point the action was set to revolve around a series of shark attacks that led the Baywatch team to investigate a drug-smuggling operation. It is unclear what Malen’s take will be for the latest version.
Malen has become an in-demand writer after his 2011 Blacklist script Bastards became a hot comedy property. Montecito  will produce that film, and Alcon will finance. Malen also wrote the sequel to Bad Teacher for Sony, with Cameron Diaz attached to star. [HollywoodReporter]

Anyway, it’s hard to know what “loosely attached” means at this stage, or whether The Rock would be playing Mitch Buchanan or someone else. All I know is that if they need a Hobie, I’ve got two words for them: Miles. Teller.
