It’s a good thing The Walking Dead didn’t kill off Maggie when Lauren Cohan left the AMC drama to star in Whiskey Cavalier. Since ABC cancelled its well-liked spy yarn, the actress can now go back to fighting zombies — and she might do just that. “I’m not sure if I can say much about it right now, actually,” showrunner Angela Kang tells Entertainment Weekly. “I’ll just say that we’re working on it.” Dead heads will recall that when Cohan left the series, Maggie was said to have departed Hilltop during Season 9’s time jump with her and Glenn’s son Hershel and gone on the road with Georgie to offer A Key to a Future to other emerging communities. Certainly, fans would be glad to have the long-running heroine back in the fold, what with Andrew Lincoln having split as Rick to star in Walking Dead movies and Danai Gurira set to make her last appearance as Michonne during Season 10. For her part, Cohan has already told TVLine that “there may have been some conversations” about her future among the undead, including the possibility of her appearing in offshoot movies a la Lincoln. “But everything is so early-days ambiguous.”

Though ratings for The Walking Dead have taken a precipitous fall since its peak, they appear to have leveled off now, and have actually seen slight upticks in the latter half of season 9 in spite of the absences of Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan. With Game of Thrones returning in April, The Walking Dead will no longer be the highest rated show on cable. It will have to settle for being one of the highest rated shows on cable. AMC nevertheless believes that ratings for the The Walking Dead and its spin-off Fear the Walking Dead (among the top five rated cable shows of last season) are enough to sustain yet a third The Walking Dead series. Details are basically non-existent at the moment, save for the fact that a third series is in “active development,” according to Ed Carroll, chief operating officer of AMC. “We’re not yet at a stage where we’ll be announcing its plans to premiere. But we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines. We feel very good about the development of that series.” Scott Gimple also teased another The Walking Dead spin-off last year. Those comments came during the company’s fourth-quarter 2018 conference call with media analysts and reporters, and they don’t give us any idea about what kind of spin-off to expect to go along with the Andrew Lincoln movies (which will now also feature Danai Gurira, as she is expected to depart in the series 10th season). One spin-off possibility that I am intrigued by is a limited series on The Commonwealth, the massive, 50,000 person community the characters on The Walking Dead encounter after The Whisperers War in the comics. In Robert Kirkman’s source material, the characters encounter The Commonwealth after it is already fully formed, but it might be interesting to center a spin-off around its creation after the initial zombie outbreak. A limited series of that nature could theoretically end its run once it intersects with The Walking Dead timeline. The timing of that could present an obstacle, however, because AMC would need to get the show up and running before The Walking Dead arrives at that point in the comics. Other possibilities include setting a series in another location, perhaps an international location like London or Tokyo in order to take better advantage of the worldwide market for The Walking Dead. Sending Negan away from The Walking Dead could also open up another spin-off possibility. In the meantime, viewers will have to be content with the creatively revitalized The Walking Dead mothership, which will air five more episodes in its ninth season.

To paraphrase another voice from another apocalypse, Andrew Lincoln will be back. While the much hyped tonight’s episode of The Walking Dead would be the last fans see of the actor on AMC’s zombie apocalypse series, Lincoln and his seemingly fatally impaled Rick Grimes character have a future with the franchise. A series of AMC Studios original films, starring Lincoln and written by Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple, are planned to continue the story of Rick Grimes, with the first expected to begin production as early as 2019. “It’s not the beginning of the end, it’s the end of the beginning,” a clean shaven Lincoln said later on aftershow Talking Dead of himself and the character he has played since the very beginning of TWD in 2010. “And I like the idea that we get to tell a bigger story, maybe with a sort of wider vista,” Lincoln told Yvette Nicole Brown in a sitdown interview. “And I’ve always been interested in what’s going on out there, you know, whether or not there is contact with the wider world. I want to know the meta of it all. And I suppose to be able to kind of touch upon that in a contained story for me is a very exciting proposition … Maybe it’s the start of a bigger story.” The Rick Grimes movies are among the first projects in development from Gimple as part of a multi-year plan for The Walking Dead Universe, which also includes other projects currently in the works: additional films, specials, series, digital content and more. According to Gimple, some of the stories will relate to The Walking Dead as fans know it while others will be standalone stories that break into new creative territory. “We have a lot on the horizon – starting with a new epic featuring one of the greatest leading actors in television history and one of the best people I’ve ever met,” said Gimple. “These films are going to be big evolutions of what we’ve been doing on the show, with the scope and scale of features. We’re starting with the first part of the continuing story of Rick Grimes, and there is much more on the way, featuring yet-unseen worlds of The Walking Dead and faces from the show’s past, as well as new characters we hope to become favorites, told by TWD veterans and emerging voices. We want to break new ground with different, distinct stories, all part of the same world that’s captured our imagination for nearly a decade of the Dead.” Starting with a TWD and spinoff Fear The Walking Dead crossover bridged by Lennie James’ Morgan this year, AMC has made it very clear they see a larger Walking Dead world coming. In September, AMC CEO Josh Sapan told an investors’ conference that “we have a plan to manage it over the next decade plus …a very careful plan.” With that mandate, to shepherd “potential brand extensions on a variety of platforms,” former Walking Dead showrunner Gimple was named Chief Content Officer for the brand back on January 13.

Jon Bernthal‘s career has really taken off since his Walking Dead days, but the actor isn’t against staying true to his roots. Bernthal will return for The Walking Dead season 9, just as his former co-star Andrew Lincoln exits the show. Despite the huge hinderance of being dead, Jon Bernthal’s character, Shane Walsh, is returning to The Walking Dead. THR reports that Bernthal is coming back for season 9 of AMC’s never-ending zombie show, just as star Andrew Lincoln is exiting. Shane was a main character in the first two seasons of the series – he was the former partner of Lincoln’s Rick Grimes, and became an antagonist on the series after the zombie outbreak. Shane and Rick had a lot of bad blood, primarily due to Shane having an affair (and fathering a child with) Rick’s wife, Lori. Shane died in season 2, and then returned as a zombie. He was then quickly dispatched with a headshot by Rick’s son Carl. Which begs the question: just how will Shane return? No one knows yet, but my guess is either in a flashback or a dream sequence. However Bernthal returns to the show, his part is going to be brief – the actor has a commitment to Netflix’s The Punisher, and THR indicates that it’s likely Bernthal will only appear in three episodes maximum of The Walking Dead season 9.

The Walking Dead is undergoing several changes as it enters its ninth season. Andrew Lincoln, who has been with the show since the beginning, is leaving, with plans to only appear in six episodes of the new season before he departs. “There needs to be an end game and that is something that is definitely being talked about,” Lincoln said. “There’s certainly an endgame in my head. Whether or not that’s the same endgame that’s in the producers’ heads or the people I work with, is another matter. That’s open for discussion.” After Lincoln departs, co-star Norman Reedus will then be bumped up to become the show’s main character. Co-star Lauren Cohan will depart the show as well. Cohan held out on announcing her return until she received a better deal, and she now plans to come back for six episodes before leaving for good. Showrunner Scott M. Gimple is also leaving the series, with Angela Kang set to take over. With all these changes, and a sense of diminishing returns from fans, one can’t help but think that The Walking Dead has perhaps run its course as a TV show. AMC is unlikely to let the show go anytime soon, though. Despite dwindling ratings, The Walking Dead remains one of AMC’s biggest hits – so much so that they gave it its own spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead. Bringing Bernthal back, even in a limited capacity, may be one way to energize the show’s fanbase as the series goes through its season 9 changes.

Season 8 of The Walking Dead has gone by the motto of “All Out War,” but off-screen, another type of battle is clearly still in full swing, as the contractual fate of star Lauren Cohan remains unresolved. A battle that has grown to now involve another cast member and even the actress herself, who has portrayed Maggie Rhee on the AMC zombie apocalypse blockbuster since Season 2. Earlier this week, fellow TWD regular Khary Payton became seemingly the first of Cohan’s co-stars to speak out for the actress when he bluntly posted “pay the woman” on his Instagram account. A pivotal figure on the series based on Robert Kirkman’s comics, the CAA-represented Cohan has been fighting for a pay increase in her new TWD contract with AMC, and going forward into its ninth season and beyond. As talks hit an impasse, the much-sought-out actress signed on in February as the female lead opposite Scott Foley in Whiskey Cavalier, ABC’s hourlong action-dramedy pilot from Bill Lawrence, Dave Hemingson and Warner Bros. TV. Now ex-showrunner and TWD franchise Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple told Deadline late last month that “these sorts of negotiations do happen all the time in television and we’re working on it.” How despite the EP’s insistence that “we’re all talking, so stay tuned,” nothing of substance has been achieved, we hear. Which is perhaps why the man who plays Kingdom leader King Ezekiel wasn’t the only one to make a move on the matter this week. After long having been announced as one of the TWD marquee names at London’s Walker Stalker Con this weekend, Cohan suddenly dropped out of the fanfest on March 8 due to a filming schedule change. That alteration was for the Whiskey Cavalier pilot, which is in production as TWD gears up for a Season 9 that Cohan may or may not substantially be a part of at this point. Cohan was supposed to join TWD co-stars current and past like Payton, Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, Norman Reedus, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the now-departed Chandler Riggs, Star Trek Discovery lead Sonequa Martin-Green and many more at the March 10-11 UK event. Cohan’s Maggie is still a big part of The Walking Dead this season and is a big part of Sunday’s “Dead Or Alive Or” episode. An episode that faces the ABC launch of the new American Idol and Fox’s deft O.J. Simpson: The Lost Confession? counter programming at 9 PM ET. BTW – AMC had no response to Payton’s Instagram post of last week. The cabler has nothing to do with the UK confab. Also, Andrew Lincoln was another no-show at Walker Stalker Con it seems as well.

The Walking Dead is heading into its eighth season and its landmark 100th episode, still rolling strong and possibly pushing its cast to incredible lengths in order to tell the story of the world that follows the zombie apocalypse. While there’s a possible time jump coming this season, Andrew Lincoln things that only the start of the changes the series could bring about in its future and the next 100 episodes. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lincoln details how he could see the show continuing on without Rick Grimes at some point. The magazine calls Lincoln the most “mentally, physically, and emotionally committed” actor you’d meet in his Walking Dead role, but that doesn’t mean the show hinges on him being around until the very end. Putting a period on the end of a performance is something Lincoln talks about during the chat: 

“I think that there’s an innate feeling and certainly in me that I love doing a play or doing the film because you get to put a period on the end of it and you get to do it nightly, which is really exciting. TV is different. The format is different because it is about sort of a continuum. But, you know, there is a sense to me that really needs some… it sounds like I’m in a shrink’s head, but there is a completion thing that I think I deserve for doing it for so long. And also probably the audience would like some completion…

“There’s only so many ways you can bend and stretch this and that. I’m not saying that the show would ever finish, but I certainly think that there’s an opportunity for the show to change at some point, and I think it should.”

For Lincoln, he doesn’t see Rick as the main narrative force in the series and the door is already open for his exit if the chooses to walk through it. That focus is Rick’s son, of course, growing up in this new world and experiencing all the beauty and horror it has to offer: 

“It’s beautifully set up for that — for the camera to be certainly his story, and then it just shifts off. If ever there was a landscape or an environment to do that, it’s our show. But whether or not that’s this season… well, you have to find out, don’t you?”

Chandler Riggs stepping into that Rick role in the show would be a tough pill to swallow for some fans, but Carl has certainly grown a bit since those early seasons. Also he’s supported by a great ensemble of characters that also seem to come and go, giving him a safety net of sorts for any sort of transition that could happen. That said, it probably shouldn’t be expected any time soon. Lincoln is the guy for now, with Scott Gilmple even jokingly talking about “year 20 or year 30” of the show being the point where the show moves on without him. But the belief from those on the show and creator Robert Kirkman is that Rick Grimes isn’t what drives The Walking Dead, even if he’s not walking into the sunset any time soon: 

“Andy is the leader of this show and his dedication to the show is absolutely inspiring,” he says. “Everyone just looks up to him and he’s a huge part of this show. But we have a very strong ensemble, and there’s a lot of characters that could carry the show. The Walking Dead is a story very much about a world and a bunch of people inhabiting that world.”

While this certainly feels like the latest worm on the hook to pull people in and make them ask, “will they do it?,” an actor wanting to go off and do other things isn’t a new or outrageous concept. Lincoln would have the luxury of choice coming from a massive success like The Walking Dead, so this type of conversation is good to put out in the open. Even if you’re not going to run off and do Shakespeare for the rest of your life, you want folks to know you could and things would be fine. We just hope they use his heroic ending if they do send him off. Make it count.

You may still be recovering from the season 7 finale, but Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln is already anticipating season 8. The 43-year-old actor recently opened up about why he’s so pumped for the next season. “I can’t wait. This is not hyperbole,” Andrew told EW. “This is not a cynical act to try and amp up enthusiasm for the hundredth episode in season 8, but I am genuinely more excited about this next episode and the following 15 than I’ve ever been in my life. I can’t wait to get back.” He added, “It’s been a lot of placing the chess pieces and positioning and introducing key players in this landscape. And I think now we get to start really playing the game. The game is afoot, as they say.” In case you missed the news, Fear the Walking Dead was just renewed for a fourth season!

AMC released a trailer for the season 6 finale of The Walking Dead which featured the tantalizing first frames of footage of Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan. As ominous as those frames were, they only showed the infamous comic book villain from the back along with a close up of his barbed-wire covered baseball bat Lucille.
Now, however, the network has followed that up with the first still image of the charismatic bully (as described by showrunner Scott M. Gimple). Once again, we don’t see Negan’s face, but he is armed and ready with Lucille. (Gulp!)
Check out the image for yourself. And then brace yourself for Sunday. Any guesses as to who may be on the receiving end of said bat?
Ask The Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln what sort of character fans should brace themselves for with the arrival of Negan on Sunday’s season 6 finale, and all he can do is laugh.
“You know …” he begins, before laughing again. “Just get ready, man. Just get ready.” Lincoln shares that exec producer Greg Nicotero, who directed the episode, has called it “the best one yet,” and Lincoln seems to agree, especially when it comes to  the introduction of his soon-to-be-on-screen nemesis. “I read the script and I went, ‘This is the greatest entrance ever written". 
Of course, that dramatic entrance may have lead to a little jealousy among the cast when it comes to Negan actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan. “All of the guys were going, ‘Aw, man. I wish I had gotten this guy!’ ” says Lincoln with a laugh. “It’s incredible. Although it’s also kind of unbearable. Norman and I were like, ‘Ugh, all the girls on set are gonna love him.’ “
Yes, then more laughing. Followed by a more serious appreciation: “He’s just the coolest guy and everybody loves him,” says Lincoln of Morgan. “Jeffrey’s such a great guy and I’ve been a huge admirer of his since he played the Comedian [in Watchmen] and everything else he’s done. We’re going to have a lot of fun. Honestly, we are so thrilled to have him. We’re lucky people.”
Lincoln knows that comic book fans have been eagerly awaiting Negan’s arrival and says they will not be disappointed. “We’ve been talking about this guy for a long time. It’s probably the most important casting since Rick, really. Everybody needs a hero, but I think they probably need a really good baddie even more. Negan’s incredibly charismatic. In this deranged society, there is a kind of logic to the way that he is running the place. He runs a tight ship, I’ll tell you that much. I’m actually very impressed. I doff my cap to this man!”
And as for the 90-minute finale itself? “It’s an incredibly brilliant and well constructed and tense final episode,” says Lincoln. “It’s really dark, man. It’s really dark.” Consider yourself warned.

(ANSA) - LOS ANGELES - Sono ricominciate ieri sera in Italia, in prima su Fox, le nuove avventure del poliziotto Rick Grimes e degli altri superstiti minacciati dall'invasione dei morti viventi di Walking Dead, la fortunata serie tv prodotta e diretta da Frank Darabont, gia' impegnato in passato in progetti cinematografici come Il Miglio Verde e Le ali della Liberta'. La seconda stagione, che e' sempre ambientata ad Atlanta, in Georgia, e' composta da 13 episodi. ''Gli sceneggiatori hanno fatto davvero un lavoro straordinario - commenta Jon Bernthal, che interpreta il sopravvisuto Shane Walsh nello show - purtroppo non mi e' concesso rivelare niente di specifico, posso solo assicurare che il copione e' avvincente e la storia diventera' piu' penetrante''. Nella seconda stagione per tutti i personaggi la sfida per la sopravvivenza sara' piu' difficile. Oltre a fuggire dagli zombie, Rick, interpretato dall'attore Andrew Lincoln, e sua moglie Lori, che ha il volto di Sarah Wayne Callies, dovranno fare i conti con la carenza di farmaci, le difficolta' nel reperire acqua potabile e tanti altri ostacoli apparentemente insormontabili. Dopo essersi salvati dall'esplosione con cui si e' conclusa la prima stagione, i sopravvissuti si allontanano da Atlanta, trovando ricovero in una fattoria. Un riparo temporaneo mentre la lotta tra i vivi e i non ancora morti si fara' sempre piu' aspra. ''Gli effetti speciali e il design degli zombie, opera di Greg Nicotero - spiega Frank Darabont, regista, produttore e sceneggiatore - sono ancora piu' realistici, ne sono stati perfezionati i dettagli e questo ovviamente dona alla serie una qualita' sempre piu' vicina a quella del cinema''. La serie e' piaciuta al pubblico americano sin dalle prime puntate. ''La risposta per la prima serie e' stata incredibile - racconta ancora Frank Darabont, - E' stata seguita da milioni di telespettatori. Il nostro obbiettivo e' ora quello di raggiungere un nuovo pubblico per poter permettere al telefilm di andare avanti per anni.
