"Feud", capolavoro di Murphy sul grande cinema
"Chi ama il grande cinema hollywoodiano non può non vedere la nuova, bellissima serie antologica di Ryan Murphy, 'Feud', che affronta la rivalità storica tra Joan Crawford e Bette Davis, prima, durante e dopo le riprese del loro film del 1962, Che fine ha fatto Baby Jane? (Studio Universal, Premium). Nemiche giurate nella vita, ma entrambe sul viale del tramonto, Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange) e Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) si convincono che il film potrebbe ridare slancio alla loro carriera. Cosa che poi accadrà veramente. Ma prima che il Film giunga sugli schermi e venga candidato agli Oscar le attrici hanno modo sfoggiano tutto il loro leggendario repertorio di bizze e di odio reciproco. Le due avevano già avuto modo di detestarsi a causa della comune passione per l'attore Franchot Tone (che poi sposò la Joan), ma iniziarono a detestarsi quando la protagonista di Johnny Guitar tentò di sedurre con fiori e regali anche Bette (un'attrice forse meno bella ma di ben altro temperamento artistico), che la rifiutò malamente. Anzi di lei diceva: «E andata a letto con tutti gli attori della Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer eccetto che con la cagnetta Lassie». Prima dell'incontro con il regista Robert Aldrich (Alfred Molina), le due avevano tentato il rilancio: la Davis con Eva contro Eva e la Crawford con So che mi ucciderai. Ma è nel film Che fine ha fatto Baby Jane?, un horror psicologico di mirabile successo, che si sublima la parabola discendente di due grandi star e che Ryan Murphy ha saputo descrivere con rara finezza. La fama, il crepuscolo, la rivalità, il disprezzo sono i temi attraverso cui si dipana la storia di due stupende naufraghe (bravissime Sarandon e Lange), aggrappate a una zattera di successo per sconfiggere i demoni che le agitavano. Quando nel 1977 domandarono a Bette Davis un commento sulla morte della rivale scolpì queste parole: «Non bisognerebbe mai parlar male dei morti. E morta Joan Crawford. Che bello!»". (Aldo Grasso)

The appetite of American Horror Story has grown from year to year in terms of ratings and awareness, with last year’s Freak Show garnering the biggest audience and most Emmy noms than any iteration preceding. So, it’s not altogether surprising that Ryan Murphy and his writing team are considering doing two iterations of the series going forward. “Next year we might do a fall American Horror Story and a spring,” says Murphy. “We have to decide.” He adds, “We’re doing something that we’ve never done before on the show where we’re doing two different groups of writers rooms. Some of our writers will be bouncing around but a whole different group coming in late August. The next thing we’re crafting up is very, very different than this. Not smaller. But just not opulent. When Jessica Lange announced that she wouldn't be appearing in American Horror Story: Hotel, fans were distraught. She's been an integral part of the show since its inception, first appearing in a pivotal supporting role in Murder House and then taking the lead with bravado in Asylum. In Freak Show, she basically performed showstoppers exclusively, including her super-uncomfortable versions of David Bowie's "Life on Mars?" and Lana Del Rey's "Gods and Monsters." She's starring in the road-trip comedy Wild Oats this fall, opposite Shirley MacLaine and Demi Moore, and will return to Broadway next year for a revival of Long Day's Journey Into Night. But Lange isn't gone from American Horror Story for good. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, series creator Ryan Murphy said:

"It’s always possible. I’m trying to deal with her play schedule. Jessica is always about the character. She’ll be back—she’s not gone forever. But that’s the fun and fresh thing about the show: sometimes somebody has to go away before you realize how much you miss them. She wants to come back we just have to come up with something."

So while we'll certainly enjoy Lady Gaga's Countess and her bloodlust and that "drillbit dildo" on Hotel, we can take solace knowing that Lange will one day return to chew scenery with glorious gusto. Considering that Murphy told EW there might be two AHS seasons next year, she'll have double the chance.

Six Emmy contenders Taraji P. Henson, Viola Davis, Lizzy Caplan, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jessica Lange, and Ruth Wilson take the cover of The Hollywood Reporter‘s latest issue, hitting stands this week. They speak candidly during a roundtable about race, sexism, aging, nudity and typecasting.
Viola on what most appealed to her and scared her about playing the lead in a Shonda Rhimes drama (How To Get Away With Murder): There was absolutely no precedent for it. I had never seen a 49-year-old, dark-skinned woman who is not a size 2 be a sexualized role in TV or film. I’m a sexual woman, but nothing in my career has ever identified me as a sexualized woman. I was the prototype of the “mommified” role. Then all of a sudden, this part came, and fear would be an understatement. When I saw myself for the first time in the pilot episode, I was mortified. I saw the fake eyelashes and, “Are you kidding me? Who is going to believe this?” And then I thought: “OK, this is your moment to not typecast yourself, to play a woman who is sexualized and do your investigative work to find out who this woman is and put a real woman on TV who’s smack-dab in the midst of this pop fiction.
Maggie on a specific point in her career when she felt the bravest: I had a rape scene in The Honorable Woman where it was clearly written that she’d be saying, “No, no, please, no,” right away. But I wanted her to be complicit and wanting it; the darkest, most painful sex, right up until the point it turned into rape. I wanted her to want something she knew she shouldn’t want. I can sometimes tell when actors fought an ordinary approach to a scene, and I’m so glad they did because it tells a better story.
Lizzy on if it’s tough to do a lot of nudity on Masters of Sex: I was more afraid of doing nudity on [HBO’s] True Blood. It got easier after that, but I’m not ever 100 percent comfortable. There was a scene last season where I take my robe off, I’m naked and then transition into locked-eye [with Michael Sheen’s character], full-on masturbation from beginning to end. We have a female showrunner who considers herself a prude, so the sex scenes always move the story forward. But I remember being in my trailer before that scene and thinking for the first time since the show started: “I really don’t want to go out there and do this.”

In "Freak Show" va di scena il fascino del mostruoso

"La nuova stagione della serie «American Horror Story» s'intitola «Freak Show»: è uno spettacolo delle stranezze, un tuffo nello spirito eccentrico e grottesco del circo (Fox, martedì, ore 22.45 e in altri appuntamenti). Elsa, interpretata dalla bravissima Jessica Lange, è la tenutaria di un decadente circo in Florida. Nella sua «corte» ha chiamato a raccolta una schiera di personaggi caratterizzati da stramberie fisiche e insolite personalità, dalle due gemelle con un solo corpo ma due teste (l'attrice Sarah Paulson è stata sottoposta a uno sdoppiamento attraverso alcuni effetti speciali), all'uomo aragosta vittima di una brutta malformazione alle mani, fino all'uomo più forzuto del mondo e all'immancabile donna barbuta. Presto si scopre che anche Elsa è portatrice di un grave deficit fisico, avendo subito una doppia amputazione alle gambe. Il suo è un vero e proprio circo degli orrori: succedono cose molto cattive e il racconto si nutre anche di alcune trame mistery, tra omicidi e scene splatter, con il sangue che scorre a fiotti in pieno spirito horror. «American Horror Story» è opera di Ryan Murphy, il creatore di «Glee» ma anche della pluripremiata serie tv drammatica «A Normal Heart»: Murphy ha riempito gli episodi con molte delle sue ossessioni, oltre ad averli colorati con un certo gusto per il bizzarro e il carnascialesco. Gli immaginari di riferimento sono molti, dal vaudeville al film Freak, un classico dell'orrore degli anni Trenta. La serie è molto forte, negli Stati Uniti ha fatto anche parecchio discutere per il suo modo di rappresentare la disabilità fisica. Senz'altro non è fatta per piacere a tutti: la rappresentazione dei fenomeni da baraccone si basa sul fascino del mostruoso, che al contempo ripugna e attrae irrimediabilmente lo sguardo. Al di là della dimensione horror, ci si può leggere anche una riflessione su cosa sia davvero la normalità". (Aldo Grasso, 02.04.2014)

Take Bassett’s voodoo queen Marie Laveau: When she’s not having sex with a minotaur (R.I.P.), Laveau gets to luxuriate on a throne made of bones in the back room of her hair salon and proclaim things like “She done messed with the wrong weeeetch.” Meanwhile, Bates tears through Madame LaLaurie’s vitriolic speeches like a raptor. “I love going to work,” she admits. “Every scene has something exciting in it for me to do, and part of the fun, too, is reading every new script. I never know what’s coming.” Adds Lange, It’s been wonderful to be able to play humor — to have somebody as sharp-witted [as Fiona].” This week’s Entertainment Weekly cover story takes you behind the scenes — and they’re some pretty fabulous and freaky scenes, at that — at one of television’s biggest breakout hit of the season, American Horror Story.

American Horror Story:Coven will begin brewing on Wednesday, Oct. 9, it has been officially announced by FX.

Exec producer Tim Minear revealed earlier this month that Coven will have “a feminist theme” as well as cover ”race and oppression and family … along with laughs and scares and a few tears.”
On the aforementioned family front, Jessica Lange will play a literally witchy mom to Sarah Paulson. It’s also been revealed that Angela Bassett is playing Marie Laveau, a character loosely based on “a woman in the 1800s who was very influential in the city,” while Kathy Bates will channel infamous 1830s New Orleans socialite/serial killer Madame LaLaurie.

Also on board for Coven are returning Horror Story players Denis O’Hare, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, Alexandra Breckenridge, Evan Peters and Taissa Farmiga, as well as new blood Emma Roberts, Patti LuPone and Gabourey Sidibe.

LA VITA E' UNA COSA SERIAL - Emmy Awards, c'eravamo tanto Ob(amati)! Il Presidente benedice i tronfi trionfi annunciati dei suoi "Modern Family" e "Homeland". "Girls" solo foglia di fico (o meglio di fica). Scandalo evidente "AHS" nelle mini-serie per il via libera a "Homeland" nei Drama
Emmy Awards sempre più come i Telegatti. I trionfi (annunciati) di "Modern Family" e "Homeland", le due serie più "sponsorizzate" da Barack Obama, la dicono lunga. Siamo sotto elezioni, del resto, e il pegno all'America del Presidente del brand New Deal bisogna pagarlo - in attesa di vedere il responso alle urne - anche in termini di statuette. Un tripudio per la sit-com che meglio rappresenta l'America liberal che più liberal non si può, nonchè per la serie che, con gli sviluppi internazionali di questi giorni, appare come la risposta più significativa e attuale alle minacce oltreconfine. In questo contesto appare ancor più scandalosa la nomination nelle "Mini-Serie" di "American Horror Story" per spianare il terreno a "Homeland" nei Drama e il "contentino" (dovuto) a Jessica Lange. Inevitabile anche, in quest'ottica, l'arrivederci all'anno prossimo per "Girls", unica vera novità tra le nomination di quest'anno (con "AHS"), probabilmente più meritevole del ritrito "Modern Family" in perdita di forza propulsiva. Era solo una foglia di fico. Anzi, di fica.
