On an early October afternoon, the casts of The CW’s “Arrowverse” serials gathered in an airport hangar on the outskirts of Vancouver B.C. for a historic event. From Arrow, there was Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen, aka the show’s emerald archer), David Ramsey (Diggle/Spartan), Willa Holland (Thea Queen/Speedy) and Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak). From The Flash, there was Grant Gustin (Barry Allen, aka the show’s scarlet speedster), Candice Patton (Iris West), Tom Cavanagh (H.R. Wells), Danielle Panabaker (Dr. Caitlin Snow) and Carlos Valdes (Cisco/Vibe). From Legends of Tomorrow, there was Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/The Atom), Caity Lotz (Sara Lance/White Canary), Dominic Purcell (Mick Rory/Heat Wave), Franz Drameh (Jax, one half of Firestorm), Victor Garber (Dr. Martin Stein, the other half of Firestorm). And from Supergirl, there was the maiden of might herself, Melissa Benoist, the only actor dressed in their caped crusader colors. (Must be dry cleaning day at the Hall of Justice).

Calling this unprecedented all-star squadron of comic book stars to order, director Dermott Downs instructed them to perform a very important heroic duty: Surprising Benoist with a “Happy Birthday” serenade. “That was overwhelming,” says the actress, who turned 28 on the day in question. “I think that will be the first and only time I will be sung to by a group of superheroes.” Of course, Benoist and all of her Super-Friends had to actually work on her birthday; not even the girl of steel gets a day off for turning another year older. The occasion of this massive team-up: filming a four-show crossover event, which begins in the final scene of the Nov. 28 episode of Supergirl and unfolds over the next three nights in episodes of The Flash, Arrow and Legends. Entertainment Weekly visited the set of the massive undertaking and brings you a report in our new issue, on sale this week. We got to see Supergirl fly, The Flash and Cisco tear a hole in the fabric of space-time (or pretend to), and even saw someone get shot. No, we can’t tell you who, but we can tell you the threat that set the sprawling plot in motion: The Dominators, mind-controlling extraterrestrials threatened by Earth’s surging population of metahumans. If you’re wondering if “mind-control” = “we’re totally going to see these superheroes fight each other,” then you’re absolutely [REDACTED].

The “Arrowverse” has an alternate moniker, the “Berlantiverse,” named after the super-producer who presides over it, and he has some feelings about the term. “I object to it, to be honest. There are just so many people that are also part of this,” says Greg Berlanti, 44, whose prodigious, eclectic output began with Everwood in 2002 and currently includes Blindspot on NBC. “Plus, you never want anything named after you that people could be upset or angry about.” Produced in collaboration with Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg, Berlanti’s small screen treatment of Warner Bros.’ DC Comics properties offers an alternative – some might argue correction – the studio’s big screen superhero pop, including the apocalyptic heavy metal of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel flicks and the bubblegum nihilism of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. The Arrowverse actually likes superheroes, believes in superheroes, and knows how to have fun with them – and critique them – without deconstructing them to smithereens. They possess the levity of Marvel’s cinematic universe (still the genre’s gold standard), and the progressiveness of Marvel’s best TV offerings (Jessica Jones, Luke Cage), but with a more carefree embrace of melodrama and whimsy.

“These shows have to work on multiple levels,” says Berlanti. “You want them to be fun and enjoyable. But if they’re not about something, why are you showing up to work every day and asking everybody to pour their heart and soul into a story if it’s only about the Flash fighting a villain of the week?”

Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist become The Flash and Supergirl, respectively, for the new cover of Variety magazine, alongside their powerhouse producer Greg Berlanti.

Here’s what the 42-year-old TV producer had to share with the mag:

On finding Melissa: “The most important decision you can make as a showrunner when you’re doing a pilot is who’s in it, and who’s directing it. If we had not found her, I would have said, ‘I don’t want to make this.’”

On making new shows: “I don’t want to do more just to do more it if it’s not good…The first thing I’m thinking about in the morning, and the last thing I’m thinking about at night, are usually the newer ones, because you haven’t figured out the algorithm yet. From the moment the shows get picked up until we have an episode that’s as good as the pilot, I’m usually stressed about how we can do it again.”

On how he juggles multiple projects: “Honestly, I’m so reliant on others. It’s the long-term relationships I’ve had that allow me to do multiple things, because you have a shorthand with these people.”

NEWS - Il trend delle strips in serie illumina Premuim Action: "Gotham", "The Flash" e la 3° inedita di "Arrow". Plus "The 100" e "Orphan Black" 2 da segnare in agenda

IN ANTEPRIMA ASSOLUTA

“Gotham” (in anteprima assoluta su PREMIUM ACTION dal 20 ottobre, le prime 2 puntate su Italia 1 il 12 ottobre) è il prequelissimo deluxe delle gesta del ragazzino che diverrà uomo-pipistrello nella metropoli del titolo. Le vicende sono viste attraverso gli occhi del detective James Gordon (interpretato da Ben McKenzie di “The OC”), figura di secondo piano nei fumetti e riabilitato di recente dalla saga dei film di Christoper Nolan. Anche gli altri personaggi sono raccontati in nuce: da Catwoman a Joker, da Pinguino a Poison Ivy, fino al fedele maggiordomo Alfred. Firma Bruno Heller, ideatore di “The Mentalist”. Per la prima volta nel piccolo schermo una serie tv sarà trasmessa in cross-casting: le prime due puntate su Italia 1 (in prima serata) con tanto di count-down contrassegnato dai film di Nolan (“Batman Begins”, “Il Cavaliere Oscuro”, “Il Cavaliere Oscuro-Il Ritorno”), poi con un battito d’ali su Premium Action.

Un lampo in tv. Dalla serie-madre "Arrow" sfreccia un nuovo super-eroe, vecchia conoscenza dei fumetti DC Comics. “The Flash” (a marzo 2015 su PREMIUM ACTION) prende vita in uno spin-off ad hoc con lo stesso team produttivo di “Arrow” (Greg Berlanti in testa). Ad interpretare il super-eroe che corre e si muove più veloce del lampo è stato chiamato Grant Gustin, già visto in “Glee”. L’attore vestirà i panni dello scienziato dalla doppia vita Barry Allen in una delle serie più attese della nuova stagione. Geoff Johns, celebre fumettista della DC Comics, ha preso parte al progetto di spin-off del personaggio nato nel 1940 e già protagonista di una fortunata serie tv del 1990 con John Wesley Shipp nella tutina di foamglas del rosso giustiziere mascherato. La sua prima apparizione è avvenuta nel primo numero di Flash Comics (1940).

Nell’apocalittica “The 100” (in anteprima assoluta su PREMIUM ACTION dal 1 ottobre) il centinaio del titolo è rappresentato dai detenuti di una stazione spaziale rimandati sulla Terra per verificarne le condizioni con lo scopo di tornarci a vivere dopo una guerra nucleare. Scopriranno che esistono “sopravvissuti” e metteranno in discussione  le proprie certezze terrestri. La serie con Isaiah Washington (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Henry Ian Cusick (“Lost”) e l’australiana emergente Eliza Taylor è già stata rinnovata per la 2° stagione, ha ricevuto la nomination agli ultimi Emmy Awards per i “migliori effetti speciali” ed è già tra i trend-topic sui social network.

In “Believe” di J.J. Abrams e del Premio Oscar Alfonso Cuarón (PREMIUM ACTION dal 12 novembre) è protagonista una ragazzina dotata di poteri sovrannaturali che intraprende una fuga on the road con un condannato a morte per un crimine non commesso. Tra “Fringe” dello stesso Abrams e “Il Fuggitivo”, emerge la debuttante Johnny Sequoyah nei panni della protagonista decenne. Nel cast fa capolino Kyle McLachlan (“Twin Peaks”). Cuarón, regista premio Oscar di “Gravity” al cinema, dirige la puntata-pilota.

 I PROSEGUIMENTI DI CULTO IN PRIMA TV

Che il progresso della scienza sia uno dei nuovi trend seriali degli ultimi anni lo prova anche la 2° stagione inedita di “Orphan Black”, in onda su PREMIUM ACTION dal 15 novembre e già inserita dal prestigioso “Entertainment Weekly” tra le “3 miglior serie della scorsa stagione”. La storia è quella di Sarah Manning (interpretata dall’astro nascente Tatiana Maslany), una ragazza orfana che, dopo avere assunto l’identità di una persona a lei straordinariamente somigliante, scopre di essere frutto di un esperimento scientifico.

A tener alta la bandiera dei super-eroi ci pensa sempre “Arrow”, la serie tv più vista in Italia nel 2013 e nel 2014 che torna con l’attesa 3° stagione inedita su PREMIUM ACTION dal 20 ottobre, in onda a pochi giorni dalla trasmissione americana in lingua originale con i sottotitoli.

E’ giunta alla 5° stagione (inedita su PREMIUM ACTION) “Covert Affairs”, forte della complicità tra gli agenti Annie Walker (Piper Perabo) e Auggie Anderson (Christopher Gorham).

Il fuoco cammina ancora con loro. I pompieri al centro di “Chicago Fire” di Dick Wolf (“Law&Order”) infiammano gli animi anche nella 2° stagione inedita (dal 24 ottobre).

Anche nella 4° stagione inedita di “Grimm” (su PREMIUM ACTION dal 3 marzo), il detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) vede il lato oscuro delle persone, le "bestie selvagge" che si nascondono nelle persone che lo circondano. Il più delle volte con cattive intenzioni.

Rimettete la freccia, ritorna "Arrow"! La serie-fenomeno della scorsa stagione tv, la più vista con oltre 3 milioni e mezzo di spettatori raggiunti, torna sugli schermi italiani - a ridosso della trasmissione Usa - con una spettacolare seconda stagione in cui i super-eroi diventeranno addirittura due! Oltre al protagonista Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), farà la sua apparizione lo storico super-eroe Flash (interpretato da Grant Gustin), destinato a conoscere uno spin-off su misura firmato dalla stessa produzione di "Arrow". L'appuntamento con l'anteprima assoluta della seconda stagione di "ARROW" è su Premium Action dal 22 ottobre, ogni martedì in prima serata.

Flash è un personaggio dei fumetti creato da Gardner Fox e Harry Lampert nel 1940, pubblicato dalla DC Comics. È un supereroe con il potere di muoversi a velocità straordinaria, sfidando le leggi della fisica. La sua prima apparizione è avvenuta nel primo numero di Flash Comics (1940). Secondo  le strips, le capacità straordinarie di Flash derivano dalla loro connessione alla Speed-Force, una fonte di potenza extra-dimensionale infinita che permette di controllare l'energia cinetica. Flash è infatti in grado di muoversi a velocità incredibili riuscendo a superare di svariate volte la velocità della luce. Quando Flash è in movimento risulta invisibile perfino ad esseri super-veloci come Superman (!), oltre a poter camminare sull'acqua, sui soffitti o addirittura per aria. Facendo vibrare le molecole del proprio corpo a super-velocità, il super-eroe dalla tuta rossa fiammante è in grado di attraversare gli oggetti solidi o farsi attraversare, senza conseguenze, da corpi contundenti o proiettili. Inoltre, può eventualmente viaggiare nel tempo o accedere ad altre dimensioni. Oltre alla velocità di movimento Flash possiede anche un'incredibile rapidità di pensiero e riflessi da combattimento elevatissimi.
