Tatiana Maslany fa risorgere "Orphan Black" (a voce)
News tratta da "Variety"
News tratta da "Variety"
Attention, Clone Club: “Orphan Black” is getting a post-TV afterlife.
Temple Street Productions, the production company behind the sci-fi thriller, inked a deal with premium digital fiction startup Serial Box to create a brand-new installment, “Orphan Black: The Next Chapter” — continuing the story of the clone sisterhood and their allies (and enemies) after the end of the TV show.
Tatiana Maslany, the Emmy-winning star of “Orphan Black” who portrayed 14 different clones on the show, is on board to voice the new episodes. The 10-episode series will be available later this summer in audiobook and text formats exclusively from Serial Box. Boat Rocker Studios, the parent of Temple Street, is an investor in Serial Box.
“Orphan Black” ran for five seasons on BBC America in the U.S. and Canada’s Space. In the TV series finale, the full list of 274 female Leda clones is revealed — prompting Cosima, one of the original Clone Club members, and her companion Delphine to embark on a quest to inoculate them against the respiratory disease the clones are susceptible to. According to Temple Street and Serial Box, “The Next Chapter” is the official continuation of the Orphan Black story, set eight years in the future from where season 5 left off and features the same characters, all voiced by Maslany. The companies aren’t sharing additional plot details but said “#cophine” — a reference to Cosima and Delphine — “definitely plays a big part in the story.”
Serial Box has enlisted a new writing team for “Orphan Black: The Next Chapter.” It has signed Malka Older as the showrunner and Mishell Baker, Lindsay Smith, Heli Kennedy, Madeline Ashby and E.C. Myers as series writers. The writers’ room approach, according to the company, lets it release serialized fiction five times faster than a traditional book.
“We are delighted to be able to extend the Orphan Black franchise through this new and innovative partnership with Serial Box,” Ivan Schneeberg and David Fortier, Boat Rocker’s co-executive chairmen and executive producers of “Orphan Black,” said in a joint statement. “Orphan Black’s devoted fans will now get more of what they love on this exciting listening and reading platform.”
Serial Box patterns its service on traditional TV shows, with new episodes (chapters) of its serialized stories released every week in “seasons” that typically run 10-16 weeks. The first chapter is free; subsequent episodes cost $1.99 each or users can buy a season pass at an average price of $13.99.
The “Orphan Black” collaboration with Temple Street marks New York-based Serial Box’s second major entertainment partnership, after announcing a deal with Marvel Entertainment to create original stories based on Black Panther, Jessica Jones, Black Widow and Thor.
Separately, a TV series set in the “Orphan Black” universe — with a completely new story — is in the works at AMC Networks from Temple Street, Variety first reported earlier this year.

Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Gus Fring on AMC’s Better Call Saul, suggests an end may be in sight for the Breaking Bad prequel series,. But it’s a ways away. “It’s tricky with [co-creator Vince Gilligan],” Esposito told Collider. “If you look at the Breaking Bad model, he said five years, five seasons, but it was really five and six” with the split final season. As for Better Call Saul, “There will be six seasons,” Esposito said. “It seems like that’s the way, the comfortable way, to end this show.” AMC had no comment on Esposito’s remarks when reached by Deadline. The Breaking Bad prequel series from Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould is currently in production on Season 5. Better Call Saul garnered more than a dozen Emmy noms for its first two seasons, including Outstanding Drama Series both years along with acting mentions for star Bob Odenkirk and fellow Breaking Bad alum Jonathan Banks, who plays the don’t-mess-with-this-guy fixer/muscle Mike Ehrmantraut. ‘Better Call Saul’ Adds Tony Dalton As Series Regular For Season 5 expected on 2020.

We’re obsessed with harper by Harper’s BAZAAR‘s latest cover, which features Nina Dobrev. The 28-year-old actress served as guest editor for the September issue, on newsstands August 22. Here’s what she had to share with the mag:
On her shocking departure from the hit CW series The Vampire Diaries in 2015: “That was the plan from the get-go. If anything, the fact that [leaving] terrified me drove me even more. I needed to feel that fear of ‘Oh, my God, what if I never get a job again?’ That just made me want to work five times as hard to make sure that didn’t happen.”
On her roles since then: “The things I want to do aren’t necessarily the things that are expected of me. I don’t want to play a teenager anymore. I want to play adult roles and be challenged and work with great filmmakers and tell incredible stories, and that has meant being really picky.”
On living an adventurous life: “My rule of thumb is, I’ll try anything once. I have a healthy—or possibly unhealthy—obsession with trying things for the first time. Nobody imagines me to be by myself backpacking, so they just think, ‘It can’t be her.’”
On how her modest background helped shape her political views: “I come from an immigrant family, and I think it’s unacceptable to treat anyone like that,” of Donald Trump’s “build the wall” rhetoric. “Hopefully he’ll get impeached. Or indicted. Or both. He just doesn’t act like a president. He acts like a reality star on a terrible, horrible show that should never be aired. And he’s responsible for incredibly important decisions for the country that I live in, so my opinion does matter whether or not I had a chance to vote.”

NEWS - Shonda Rhimes lascia ABC per Netflix? Ecco perché i grandi showrunner mollano i network generalisti
Articolo tratto da "Vulture"
Articolo tratto da "Vulture"
For networks and their affiliated studios, finding a way to hold on to top-tier talent used to be a relatively simple proposition. Big producer threatening to jump to another company? Back up a Brinks truck. And if money alone wasn’t the only concern, offer the talent more “creative freedom,” usually by guaranteeing a certain number of “straight-to-series” projects so her ideas won’t have to go through the usual (and often demoralizing) pilot process. As important as both those factors remain in talent negotiations, Shonda Rhimes’s just-announced decision to sign with Netflix and leave ABC/Disney points to a bleak new reality for old-school broadcasters trying to hold on to big names. For some Hollywood creatives, particularly those at the peak of their careers, offers of big bucks and promises of creative autonomy aren’t enough to overcome the view that network television is now the least attractive medium in which to work. Rhimes didn’t leave just leave ABC. She left network TV. As financially lucrative as broadcast remains, the trade-offs seem increasingly not worth it for showrunners such as Rhimes, who chafe at its many downsides. Instead of making anywhere from 8 to 13 episodes per year, broadcast producers often have to churn out two dozen episodes each season. Content restrictions mandated by advertisers and the government give creators less storytelling freedom. Shorter and shorter episodic lengths, the result of networks trying to squeeze in even more commercials, mean stories often need to be rushed. Talking to The Wall Street Journal about her decision, Rhimes strongly hinted that these fundamental differences between making a show for a broadcaster and for a streamer such as Netflix drove her to depart. “I’m thrilled by the idea of a world where I’m not caught in the necessary grind of network television,” she told the newspaper. Keep in mind, Rhimes already had about as much creative freedom as any producer currently working in linear TV today enjoys. She had basically stopped taking most (if not all) notes from her bosses at the network and studio. Even after her drama The Catch had clearly failed to connect with audiences, ABC ordered a second season of the show and gave Rhimes time to overhaul the premise. (It still didn’t work.) Still, even if her superstar status understandably forced ABC to give Rhimes more room to make shows the way she wanted to, she was still mostly making shows by network TV rules.
By contrast, streaming networks in general offer producers a completely different creative playground. Netflix lets Masters of None’s Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang imagine a comedy in which every episode feels like a new, mini–independent film. Amazon gives Jill Soloway the freedom to tell a story like that at the heart of Transparent, an idea that wouldn’t make it past the pitch stage at a broadcaster. And the all-episodes-at-once model pioneered by Netflix gives creators the opportunity to engage audiences in immersive viewing experiences designed to be digested over the course of a few days rather than via the relatively glacial pace of a weekly release. Linear networks such as HBO and FX obviously offer some of the same freedoms as a Netflix, and even broadcasters have pushed their own boundaries to allow for creative innovation (think ABC’s own American Crime). A streamer like Netflix, however, offers all of these innovations, in addition to a global reach unmatched by linear networks and a deep, deep pocketbook with which to fund creators’ visions. For a few years now, the stark differences between the network and Netflix models of television have made it more difficult for broadcasters to attract top names. Networks struggle like never before to find interesting and well-known actors in their shows each pilot season because so many stars now want to work on streaming shows. As one exec told Vulture last year, “The talent wants to go to the fancy-schmancy new kids on the block.” (And if a streaming series isn’t an option, a premium or basic cable show often comes before broadcast these days.) The Rhimes deal shows how streaming fever may now be spreading beyond younger, fresher talent to creators who are already successful veterans in the network world. While this is clearly a problem for broadcasters, particularly a struggling network such as ABC, it’s also important to not assume it spells doom for linear TV. There are still plenty of talented producers willing — even eager — to work in a medium where even the least successful series reaches far more viewers than most cable shows and the likely audience for streaming shows. Plus, networks have proven time and again they’re able to adapt to new threats. Basic cable was supposed to spell the end for broadcast; it didn’t. HBO’s late-1990s golden age (Sex and the City, The Sopranos) was seen by some as a sign great writers would never again work for one of the Big Four, but then some relative unknowns named J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, Marc Cherry, and, yes, Shonda Rhimes created Lost, Desperate Housewives, and Grey’s Anatomy, all of which premiered in the same 2004–05 season.
Things are far tougher for broadcasters than they were even ten years ago, of course. Younger viewers in particular have nearly given up watching scripted shows via linear television. Advertisers are moving their money elsewhere. But plenty of folks still do have a nightly TV habit, and like the Big Three automakers who’ve managed to (mostly) stay afloat despite decades of foreign threats, broadcasters have proven themselves exceedingly resourceful over the years. Pundits have predicted the death of network TV forever, but so far, network TV has always found a way to survive.

News tratta da "The Hollywood Reporter"
Lea Michele has booked her next act.
The Glee and Scream Queens favorite has joined the cast of ABC's untitled city mayor comedy pilot, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
From ABC Studios and Hamilton's Daveed Diggs, the project explores what happens when an outspoken, idealistic rapper named Courtney (Search Party's Brandon Micheal Hall) runs for office as a publicity stunt. When he actually gets elected, he surprises everyone (including himself) when he has a natural knack for the job and slowly transforms City Hall.
Details on the role Michele will play were not immediately available as the part is being adjusted to specifically accommodate the actress. The character originally was planned to be Courtney's chief of staff. It's unclear if that will remain as the part continues to shift with Michele's commitment to the project. The ABC comedy marks her first pilot since Fox's Glee and first series-regular role outside of the Ryan Murphy universe. For Michele, meanwhile, this marks her follow-up to Fox's Scream Queens. The horror-comedy anthology from executive producer Murphy remains on the bubble and awaits word on its third season. Sources say Murphy released Michele from her deal for Scream Queens. Her casting does not have any bearing on if the series returns. Instead, it means her character of Hester is not going to be returning for a potential third season.
Jeremy Bronson (Speechless) will pen the script and exec produce the ABC Studios comedy alongside Diggs, Jamie Tarses, Scott Stuber and James Griffiths, with the latter set to direct the single-camera comedy.

The appetite of American Horror Story has grown from year to year in terms of ratings and awareness, with last year’s Freak Show garnering the biggest audience and most Emmy noms than any iteration preceding. So, it’s not altogether surprising that Ryan Murphy and his writing team are considering doing two iterations of the series going forward. “Next year we might do a fall American Horror Story and a spring,” says Murphy. “We have to decide.” He adds, “We’re doing something that we’ve never done before on the show where we’re doing two different groups of writers rooms. Some of our writers will be bouncing around but a whole different group coming in late August. The next thing we’re crafting up is very, very different than this. Not smaller. But just not opulent. More rogue and more dark.” To continue reading more about the upcoming season of American Horror Story, pick up the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, on newsstands Friday, or buy it here.

When Jessica Lange announced that she wouldn't be appearing in American Horror Story: Hotel, fans were distraught. She's been an integral part of the show since its inception, first appearing in a pivotal supporting role in Murder House and then taking the lead with bravado in Asylum. In Freak Show, she basically performed showstoppers exclusively, including her super-uncomfortable versions of David Bowie's "Life on Mars?" and Lana Del Rey's "Gods and Monsters." She's starring in the road-trip comedy Wild Oats this fall, opposite Shirley MacLaine and Demi Moore, and will return to Broadway next year for a revival of Long Day's Journey Into Night. But Lange isn't gone from American Horror Story for good. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, series creator Ryan Murphy said:

But that’s the fun and fresh thing about the show: sometimes somebody has to go away before you realize how much you miss them. She wants to come back we just have to come up with something."So while we'll certainly enjoy Lady Gaga's Countess and her bloodlust and that "drillbit dildo" on Hotel, we can take solace knowing that Lange will one day return to chew scenery with glorious gusto. Considering that Murphy told EW there might be two AHS seasons next year, she'll have double the chance.

Articolo tratto da "TvLine"
Winter is coming — and so is the end of Game of Thrones.
“I think seven seasons and out has never been the conversation; the question is how much beyond the seventh season are we going to do,” Michael Lombardo, President of HBO Programming told reporters Thursday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills.
“[The producers are] feeling like there’s probably two more years after six,” Lombardo added. “I would love for them to change their minds, but that’s what we’re looking at right now.”
As for whether or not HBO might follow up Thrones‘ run with a prequel series, Lombardo said, “I would be open to anything [the producers] want to do. There’s enormous storytelling to be mined in a prequel. … At this point, all the focus is on figuring out the next few years with this show.” Thrones fans, would you be OK with the series ending after Season 8? And what about this hypothetical prequel being bandied about

NEWS - Fermi tutti!

Fans of zombie films are no doubt familiar with the standard zombie film ending, popularized in George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead trilogy: Eventually, the zombies overrun the planet and everyone dies. Sometimes, in zombie films, the zombies are wiped out, there are a few survivors, and they ride off into the sunset.
Robert Kirkman’s original conception for The Walking Dead, in fact, was in response to how zombie films typically ended, as he told Marc Maron in a recent WTF podcast. “They never solve it. At the end of every movie, they’re like ‘The world is covered in zombies, and we’re out of time, so see ya later!”.
George Romero famously doesn’t care for The Walking Dead, saying of it that “it’s a soap opera with a zombie occasionally.” Conversely, Kirkman created The Walking Dead in response to the disappointment he felt at the end of Romero’s zombie flicks. He wanted to know what happens after the end. “How do you continue to find food and shelter and protect loved ones for years and years and deal with the fall of civilization?” Kirkman wanted to know. “How does that affect you? The weak people get strong, and the strong people get weak, and people become insane.”
But The Walking Dead eventually has to end. It may not be anytime soon — Kirkman has suggested the series could run 10 or 12 or more seasons — but the show eventually has to come to a close. And how would Robert Kirkman like The Walking Dead to end?
Not in a cataclysmic event, as we’ve come to expect from the zombie genre. Rather, he’d like it to continue until the walkers are wiped out. “The goal… I hope The Walking Dead goes on long enough that at the end, everyone is like, ‘Good thing we took care of those zombies!'”
Don’t expect that to come anytime soon, although Kirkman doesn’t want the series to run forever. “Let’s all be honest. season 16? I’m not even going to be watching this show. I’ll be on a boat. Oh, [season 17]? I don’t care! I’ve transcended television.”
He also joked that more spin-offs aren’t out of the question. “We’re doing [Fear the Walking Dead], and I’m sure that, if it does well, we’ll do The Walking Dead: China eventually. [And then] The Walking Dead: SVU.”

“People talk about how The Walking Dead is bleak, and if you take a certain cross-section of the story, then yeah. Horrible. People have their loved ones eaten and they have a horrible time. But I see the story from beginning to end, over many many years about humanity overcoming this insurmountable apocalyptic situation.”Kirkman may never reveal the origins of the zombie virus, as he’s mentioned in the past, but it’s good to know that he does have an ending in mind, and even better to know that it is a hopeful one in which some of his characters — LIKE DARYL DIXON, RIGHT? — endure and survive.

Nina Dobrev shows off her figure in a skin tight outfit on the cover of Self magazine’s June 2015 issue, on newsstands May 26. Here’s what the 26-year-old actress had to share with the mag:
On leaving The Vampire Diaries: “I’ve loved working on this show. It’s been such a crazy, awesome adventure, and I’ve been surrounded by so many people who I consider family. I know this is a new exciting step in the right direction for me, but it’s going to be so strange not to be with them.”
On preparing to audition for roles: “I’m ready to put up that fight again. I’m excited to put up that fight.”
On a roadtrip she’s taking before getting ready to hit the pavement: “There are no hotel reservations, no real plans. Just six people, three vehicles, two in each car.”
Nina Dobrev has nothing, but wonderful things to say about ex Ian Somerhalder, who just married Nikki Reed! “I’ve said this before, that we didn’t break up because anything bad happened or because there wasn’t love or friendship,” the 26-year-old actress shared to E! News. “I love him and the friendship is still strong and I think he’s great and I care about him. And that didn’t change. Yes, we’re professional and that’s fine. We were friends long before we dated and we still are now.”
She added about Ian‘s wedding, “When I heard about the wedding, I thought it was beautiful. They look happy and I am happy, and so I don’t see why there should be a problem with that… Of course, we’re on a teen drama show, everyone’s going to look for drama…I just ignore it.”
