The idea for a Sin City TV show has been kicking around Hollywood since 2013, but it looks like it’s finally going to happen. Frank Miller, who created the graphic novels on which the two hyper-stylized noir films were based, has signed a deal with Legendary Television to adapt the franchise into a TV show, and Robert Rodriguez – who co-directed the two Sin City movies alongside Miller – is in negotiations to come on board. And from the sound of it, this may not be the only Sin City series that’s in our future. Deadline brought word of the deal between Miller and Legendary, saying “the deal on the table is for Legendary to guarantee a first season of the show, contingent on them setting it up with a network or streaming platform. The deal with Miller also calls for a hard R animated series for a Sin City prequel based on Miller’s graphic novels.” The wording in their piece is slightly unclear, but it sounds like there are two separate projects here: a live-action Sin City show which will presumably repeat the visual aesthetic established in the two movies, and then a hard R animated show in addition to that. If the deal goes through with Rodriguez, he and Miller will be executive producers on the show(s?) along with Legendary Television, while Stephen L’Heureux, a producer of Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, will join as a producer and Silenn Thomas, who heads Miller’s production company, will also produce.  If you’re surprised this hasn’t happened already, it’s not for a lack of trying. Back in 2013, The Weinstein Company was working on a show that would reunite Miller and Rodriguez, but that version remained in development hell. Four years later, Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) and director Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) were attached to a reboot that would have introduced new characters and storylines. That version never materialized, either. But Sin City‘s anthology format seems much better suited for television than the big screen, where the inventive green screen visual effects from the original 2005 film failed to remain impressive to audiences nine years later in 2014’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. It’s clear that Miller and Rodriguez know how to translate that eye-popping style from the comic to the screen, so maybe the TV format, where each story in this violent, dirty, neo-noir world can breathe a bit more, will be the right medium for this property.

It’s a good thing The Walking Dead didn’t kill off Maggie when Lauren Cohan left the AMC drama to star in Whiskey Cavalier. Since ABC cancelled its well-liked spy yarn, the actress can now go back to fighting zombies — and she might do just that. “I’m not sure if I can say much about it right now, actually,” showrunner Angela Kang tells Entertainment Weekly. “I’ll just say that we’re working on it.” Dead heads will recall that when Cohan left the series, Maggie was said to have departed Hilltop during Season 9’s time jump with her and Glenn’s son Hershel and gone on the road with Georgie to offer A Key to a Future to other emerging communities. Certainly, fans would be glad to have the long-running heroine back in the fold, what with Andrew Lincoln having split as Rick to star in Walking Dead movies and Danai Gurira set to make her last appearance as Michonne during Season 10. For her part, Cohan has already told TVLine that “there may have been some conversations” about her future among the undead, including the possibility of her appearing in offshoot movies a la Lincoln. “But everything is so early-days ambiguous.”

When we last left Better Call Saul, Jimmy McGill — who never quite got over his brother’s death, or the shadow of his brother that hung over him — had fully transformed into Saul Goodman. We haven’t got a ton of details about where Better Call Saul will be headed in season five, though it appears that Saul will explore the relationship between Kim and Jimmy now that Jimmy is Saul. Unfortunately, fans of the series are going to have to wait for a while before the next season of Better Call Saul arrives on AMC. During an earnings call with AMC this week, we learned that the Breaking Bad spin-off will not be returning in 2019. The head of AMC, Sarah Barnett, would not offer anything else about the series, except that talent concerns drove the decision, and that Saul is closer to the end than it is the beginning. The move actually makes sense. The series has taken longer in the last two seasons than the first two seasons (seasons one and two began in February, while season 3 began in April and season 4 in August). We’re it to follow a similar schedule, it would premiere in October, which is when The Walking Dead typically debuts, so it’s probably best to hold it until either the interim between the two halves of The Walking Dead or April 2020, when The Walking Dead is wrapping up its tenth season. It also makes sense because Peter Gould and Vince Gillian typically take at least a full six months to write the season before shooting even begins, and Saul may take more finessing, particularly if it needs to work in conjunction with the Breaking Bad movie, which is expected to center on Aaron Paul’s character in a post-Breaking Bad world. That might also entail crossing paths with Gene, the future incarnation of Saul Goodman, who currently lives in Nebraska. As Better Call Saul approaches the Breaking Bad timeline, there’s also a higher degree of difficulty where it concerns the writing (and possibly more scheduling conflicts, should additional Breaking Bad characters need to be added to the mix). In either case, it’s going to be a long wait for season 5 of Better Call Saul, but if there’s one thing we know from past seasons, it’s that it will be worth it. In the meantime, Killing Eve, which will now air on both BBC America and AMC, may satiate the fix for those looking for a smart, sophisticated drama.

Though ratings for The Walking Dead have taken a precipitous fall since its peak, they appear to have leveled off now, and have actually seen slight upticks in the latter half of season 9 in spite of the absences of Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan. With Game of Thrones returning in April, The Walking Dead will no longer be the highest rated show on cable. It will have to settle for being one of the highest rated shows on cable. AMC nevertheless believes that ratings for the The Walking Dead and its spin-off Fear the Walking Dead (among the top five rated cable shows of last season) are enough to sustain yet a third The Walking Dead series. Details are basically non-existent at the moment, save for the fact that a third series is in “active development,” according to Ed Carroll, chief operating officer of AMC. “We’re not yet at a stage where we’ll be announcing its plans to premiere. But we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines. We feel very good about the development of that series.” Scott Gimple also teased another The Walking Dead spin-off last year. Those comments came during the company’s fourth-quarter 2018 conference call with media analysts and reporters, and they don’t give us any idea about what kind of spin-off to expect to go along with the Andrew Lincoln movies (which will now also feature Danai Gurira, as she is expected to depart in the series 10th season). One spin-off possibility that I am intrigued by is a limited series on The Commonwealth, the massive, 50,000 person community the characters on The Walking Dead encounter after The Whisperers War in the comics. In Robert Kirkman’s source material, the characters encounter The Commonwealth after it is already fully formed, but it might be interesting to center a spin-off around its creation after the initial zombie outbreak. A limited series of that nature could theoretically end its run once it intersects with The Walking Dead timeline. The timing of that could present an obstacle, however, because AMC would need to get the show up and running before The Walking Dead arrives at that point in the comics. Other possibilities include setting a series in another location, perhaps an international location like London or Tokyo in order to take better advantage of the worldwide market for The Walking Dead. Sending Negan away from The Walking Dead could also open up another spin-off possibility. In the meantime, viewers will have to be content with the creatively revitalized The Walking Dead mothership, which will air five more episodes in its ninth season.

After seven seasons on The Walking Dead, Steven Yeun’s character, Glenn Rhee, was killed off the series in the same fashion as his comic-book counterpart. It was a death that Yeun both thought went too far and a death that he was very excited about. It’s been two-and-a-half years since Glenn’s death on The Walking Dead, and now Steven Yeun is getting back in business with its creator, Robert Kirkman. Yeun will provide voice for the lead character in the animated Invincible, the first series to come out of Kirkman’s production deal with Amazon. It’s based on Kirkman’s comic of the same name, which ran for 144 episodes, beginning in 2003, the same year that Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comic began printing issues. Yeun will play Mark Grayson, “a normal teenager except for the fact that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet. Shortly after his 17th birthday, Mark begins to develop powers of his own and enters into his father’s tutelage. The series is described as suspenseful, action-filled, and emotion-packed, yet builds upon poignant and heartwarming moments of love, friendship, and humanity.” Yeun will join an all-star roster of talent that will also include the voices of Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, and Mae Whitman, among others. What’s also interesting is that while Seth Rogen is doing voice-work for the Amazon animated series, he is also writing and directing a feature film based on the same Kirkman property along with his partner Evan Goldberg. The comic’s run of 144 issues should provide plenty of material for both the animated series and the feature film. The source material is both violent and funny, and it takes destructive aim at a number of superhero tropes. The comic has a sizable following that also happens to include two high-profile devotees: Carl and Enid from The Walking Dead.

Ecco la prima mossa per sparigliare le carte in vista dell'ingresso nel mondo di Netflix. Come si sa, Apple sta per iscriversi alla grande corsa dei contenuti in streaming originali: film programmi televisivi, serie tv. Però, ed è la strategia, decide di farlo senza far violenze, scene di sesso e prese di posizione politiche. Mica poco in un mercato che spesso vive di questi contenuti, spesso firmati Netflix come House of Cards e Orange is the New Black, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Dexter fino a Homeland e Walking Dead. Una politica molto restrittiva che potrebbe complicare i programmi della Mela, decisa a investire in contenuti originali 4,2 miliardi di dollari entro il 2022. Il primo veto - afferma il Wall Street Journal che ha lanciato la notizia - sarebbe arrivato dall'amministratore delegato di Tim Cook su Vital Signs, serie tv ispirata alla biografia piuttosto sopra le righe del rapper Dr Dre, uno dei mammasantissima della scena musicale americana. Motivo: una scena che ritraeva un'orgia. Non è bastato un taglio ma c'è voluto lo stop, visto che Cook avrebbe deciso di cassare l'intera produzione. E non sembra essere, sostiene il Wall Street Journal, una scelta isolata ma una vera e propria linea editoriale: la Mela vuole qualità, grandi firme e stelle del cinema, ma non accetterà contenuti che possano urtare la suscettibilità di alcuni spettatori. E una strategia che può invertire la linea e dare una nuova tendenza allo streaming dei prossimi anni. Però, nel frattempo, la decisione potrebbe spaventare alcuni sceneggiatori e registi. Perché? Perché, nonostante i golosissimi cachet elargiti da Cupertino, potrebbero evitare di incorrere in lacci troppo stretti e preferire contenuti più oscuri ma di maggiore appeal e (forse) successo. Bisognerà infatti capire se, al netto della suscettibilità, gli spettatori gradiranno serie così politicamente corrette. Di certo, oggi le tendenze social non sembrano così tolleranti. Il segnale comunque è importante. Dietro la scelta di Cook ci sono un timore e un pericolo. Il problema, reale, è legato al fatto che Apple non è un editore «puro». Netflix misura il proprio successo dalle serie. E, in caso di contenuti non graditi, la ripercussione peggiore potrebbe verificarsi con una flessione degli abbonamenti. Per la Mela è diverso: soprattutto in un mercato americano molto vigile, eventuali critiche su contenuti violenti o sessualmente espliciti potrebbero ripercuotersi sulle vendite di iPhone. Improbabile ma possibile. Cook preferisce non rischiare. Il pericolo deriva dalla concorrenza. Non solo da quella «generalista» di Netflix e Amazon. Se le indicazioni pubblicate dal Wall Street Journal fossero confermate, Apple sarebbe una sorta di Disney dello streaming: contenuti a prova di famiglie. Ecco l'altro concorrente. Proprio la casa produttrice di Topolino sta preparando il proprio servizio streaming. Una delle sue caratteristiche sarà l'assenza di contenuti che richiedono ai minori la presenza di un adulto.

Jon Bernthal‘s career has really taken off since his Walking Dead days, but the actor isn’t against staying true to his roots. Bernthal will return for The Walking Dead season 9, just as his former co-star Andrew Lincoln exits the show. Despite the huge hinderance of being dead, Jon Bernthal’s character, Shane Walsh, is returning to The Walking Dead. THR reports that Bernthal is coming back for season 9 of AMC’s never-ending zombie show, just as star Andrew Lincoln is exiting. Shane was a main character in the first two seasons of the series – he was the former partner of Lincoln’s Rick Grimes, and became an antagonist on the series after the zombie outbreak. Shane and Rick had a lot of bad blood, primarily due to Shane having an affair (and fathering a child with) Rick’s wife, Lori. Shane died in season 2, and then returned as a zombie. He was then quickly dispatched with a headshot by Rick’s son Carl. Which begs the question: just how will Shane return? No one knows yet, but my guess is either in a flashback or a dream sequence. However Bernthal returns to the show, his part is going to be brief – the actor has a commitment to Netflix’s The Punisher, and THR indicates that it’s likely Bernthal will only appear in three episodes maximum of The Walking Dead season 9.

The Walking Dead is undergoing several changes as it enters its ninth season. Andrew Lincoln, who has been with the show since the beginning, is leaving, with plans to only appear in six episodes of the new season before he departs. “There needs to be an end game and that is something that is definitely being talked about,” Lincoln said. “There’s certainly an endgame in my head. Whether or not that’s the same endgame that’s in the producers’ heads or the people I work with, is another matter. That’s open for discussion.” After Lincoln departs, co-star Norman Reedus will then be bumped up to become the show’s main character. Co-star Lauren Cohan will depart the show as well. Cohan held out on announcing her return until she received a better deal, and she now plans to come back for six episodes before leaving for good. Showrunner Scott M. Gimple is also leaving the series, with Angela Kang set to take over. With all these changes, and a sense of diminishing returns from fans, one can’t help but think that The Walking Dead has perhaps run its course as a TV show. AMC is unlikely to let the show go anytime soon, though. Despite dwindling ratings, The Walking Dead remains one of AMC’s biggest hits – so much so that they gave it its own spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead. Bringing Bernthal back, even in a limited capacity, may be one way to energize the show’s fanbase as the series goes through its season 9 changes.

There have been memorable zombies over the first eight-plus seasons of The Walking Dead: little girl with bunny slipper zombies, obese stuck-in-a-well zombies, gas mask zombies, Winslow. But there’s one kind of zombie (or walker, or biter, or… they have a lot of names) we haven’t seen on the show: a stupid, sexy zombie. In a decision that will fulfill someone’s specific fetish, The Walking Dead will have a naked zombie in the second half of season eight. “There’s an episode where we did our first fully nude walker,” executive producer Greg Nicotero teased. “We’ve never done that before.” It’s unclear whether the zombie will be a man or a woman. In that same interview with Entertainment Weekly, Nicotero also said there’s “much less talking about what’s going on” in the second half of the season. “Clearly, the balance has shifted. Now that Negan and his group have escaped the Sanctuary, there’s not as much talking about what the ramifications are of what we’re going to do, but now our group has to be on the defensive because Negan’s out and he’s pissed and it’s definitely a different dynamic than the first half of the season.” Maybe Rick can distract Negan with a zombie that’s wearing nothing at all.

This week, there have been a lot of The Walking Dead fans — and Star Wars fans, for that matter — who are unhappy that things did not go their way with their respective franchises. In the case of The Walking Dead, fans have gone further than to leave negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes: One fan has actually launched an online petition to have The Walking Dead showrunner, Scott Gimple, fired from the series. The petition stems from Gimple’s decision in the midseason finale to kill off a popular character, Carl Grimes, who is not only still alive but a rising leader in Robert Kirkman’s source material. The character is not officially dead on the TV series, although Gimple left no doubt about his eventual fate. The decision upset some fans, as well as the actor who plays Carl, Chandler Riggs, and even his father. The petition, created at Change.org by a fan, Tyler Sigmon, has so far amassed 35,000 signatures (with a goal of 50,000). It asks that AMC fire Gimple not only for killing off Carl, but for the unfair treatment Sigmon feels Riggs received: 

Scott [Gimple] has decided to kill off the shows most pivotal character Carl Grimes, son of main character Rick Grimes. The entire show has been a lead up to showing Carl become the leader that his father is, maybe one day taking on the mantle himself. Actor Chandler Riggs even considered postponing his college education so he could work on the show after Gimple promised that he would be on the show for 3 more years. Chandlers dad, William Riggs, said in a facebook post, that was later pulled, that Gimple fired his son just 2 weeks before his 18th birthday even though he promised the actor 3 more years of working on the show. He goes on to say that he never trusted Gimple or AMC and that his son did, making it especially heartbreaking for him to be fired.

The petition is very unlikely to result in Gimple’s departure on the series. For one, all of season eight has already been shot, so there’s another eight episodes in the can that will give Gimple an opportunity either renew fans’ faith in his stewardship or leave them further disappointed. More importantly, I believe for a variety of reasons that killing off Carl Grimes will ultimately be better for the series in the long term, notwithstanding his role in the source material. Most importantly, and this goes for Star Wars, as well: Film and television makers have no duty to execute for entitled fans the exact vision they had for the series, just as entitled fans have no duty to continue watching a film or television franchise with which they have grown disillusioned. Certainly, fans have every right to complain about the direction a movie or television show takes, or even sign a petition. While showrunners and directors are certainly allowed to take those opinions into consideration, storylines should not ultimately be dictated by the fans.
