When Hannibal ended on an all too literal cliffhanger at the end of its third season, fans never quite gave up hope that Mads Mikkelson’s Hannibal Lector and Hugh Dancy’s Will Graham would return to their screens again eventually. As is the case with most of Fuller’s shows, it was cut unceremoniously short, and the devoted group of supporters — in this case “Fannibals” — have continued to obsess over the details long after it was gone. Hannibal was breathtaking, violent, and cerebral, and a true rarity on network television.
Well, showrunner Bryan Fuller is here to put a little bit of wind in your sails. The American Gods mastermind recently sat down with Shock Waves podcast to discuss what could still be for the cult show. At the very least, he clarifies whether or not our leads would survive that fall.

“There weren’t going to be any bodies found floating in that lagoon. And the whole point of showing Gillian Anderson sitting at a table with two additional place settings and her leg on the table was there was a big splash and dinner guests are coming.”

According to Fuller, he would like to tackle Silence Of The Lambs in a potential fourth season, and the rights for that novel revert back in August of 2017. Still, Fuller makes it clear that this is not an attempt to “fix” the film, but merely an opportunity to expand.

“I think the film adaptation is a perfect film, but there’s a lot of interesting nooks and crannies to explore in a television series. I hope we get to tell the story.”

Fuller explains that a “6 to 8 episode miniseries here and there” would be ideal for the cast and creative team, which sounds perfect to me. The show’s entire run is currently streaming on Amazon Prime, so how about throwing some money at them as penance for cancelling Good Girls Revolt?

On her husband Hugh Dancy: “He is a gentleman. Downton Abbey-esque? I guess. He was raised well, went to great schools, he’s a clever guy and he makes me giggle… I scored. I lucked out, big-time! But when you’re truly intimate with somebody, they tend to lose their physical shape, you see through them. Occasionally I’ll wake up and notice his… form. And I’ll be, ‘Oh, wow. Dude. Is a looker.’ Then I get shy, all over again. It’s not why I love him, but it’s a very nice bonus.
On not working with Damian Lewis anymore: “I miss acting with Damian, first and foremost. He is an extraordinarily gifted performer. I also miss his friendship, he’s a very bright, funny chap, who adores his wife and kids. It’s rare to find someone equally as talented as he is kind and sane.”

The 34-year-old star posed topless for a sexy photo shoot in the December issue of Interview magazine and opened up to guest interviewer Dustin Hoffman about playing Angela Chase on "My So-Called Life" versus Carrie Mathison on "Homeland."
"I'd actually only done one series before 'Homeland' and I was 14 when I did it, and we only made 19 episodes-so 'Homeland' has really been my first time aging with a character and experiencing her develop and change," Danes told the 76-year-old iconic actor.

Danes, who married actor husband Hugh Dancy in 2009 and is a mom to 10-month-old son Cyrus, compared her relationships on the show to her real life.
"I know Mandy Patinkin's (her character's boss and mentor Saul Berenson) process-I know his music and how to run and to play with it. It's such a gift to get to know an actor over this many years-and always in a new context. It's like being in a marriage."
As to how she impeccably captures the personality of someone diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, Danes admitted to the mag she watched several YouTube videos of users who kept diaries when going through the initial stages of mania, much like Mathison's frenzied spells on camera.

NEWS - Siete pronti per il Gnam-Gnam style? Da giovedì arriva "Hannibal" in prima serata senza tagli (a questi ultimi ci pensa lui...) 

A volte il morso della fame è quello della paura.

“Hannibal”, la serie-evento della stagione televisiva andrà in anteprima assoluta su Italia 1 da settembre, in prima serata.

Prima del “silenzio degli innocenti” e di Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) c’era Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), profiler del F.B.I. talmente in sintonia con i serial-killer che insegue da entrare nelle loro menti. Vede le vittime in flashback con i loro occhi, i loro desideri, le loro deviazioni. Una spinta omicida il più delle volte macchiavellica, non dettata da un impeto di ira, nascosta sotto le ceneri di un abuso o perversione che divampa, sulla quale scava ininterrottamente – senza una parvenza di vita privata – il meticoloso Graham. Fino al baratro della follia, fino a identificarsi pericolosamente con gli assassini seriali che gli entrano in testa…

Per questo, Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne), il capo delle Scienze Comportamentali del F.B.I., affianca al protagonista un “tale“ dottor Hannibal Lecter (interpretato dal danese Mads Mikkelsen), psichiatra forense con il pallino della buona cucina (meglio se…umana). E’ l’inizio di una partita a scacchi tra due mentalità brillanti ancorchè disturbate, di una lucida follia che porterà all’inevitabile scacco matto.

Fanno da contorno alla “partita”: la profiler e psichiatra Alana Bloom (Caroline Dhavernas); l’agente federale Beverly Katz (Hettienne Park), specializzata in rilevamenti d’indizi sui luoghi degli omicidi; la dottoressa Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson), l’analista di Lecter che gli ricorda in più di un’occasione di essere lei ad analizzare lui (non il contrario).

Bryan Fuller (Heroes, Pushing Daisies, Dead like me), cura l’adattamento in 13 capitoli dei personaggi portati alla luce dal romanzo Red Dragon di Thomas Harris, sorta di prequel de Il Silenzio degli Innocenti. La serie tv è in realtà un prequel del romanzo pubblicato nel 1981. Il libro aveva conosciuto in precedenza due traduzioni cinematografiche: il memorabile Manhunter-Frammenti di un omicidio (1986) diretto da Michael Mann (con William Petersen, futuro protagonista di CSI: Scena del crimine, nei panni di Graham) e l’omonimo e dimenticabile Red Dragon (2002) di Brett Ratner, con Edward Norton e Anthony Hopkins (girato dopo il successo de Il Silenzio degli Innocenti di Jonathan Demme nel 1991). Antecedente alle vicende narrate nella serie tv, risulta il film Hannibal Lecter – Le origini del male (2007), dal romanzo omonimo di Harris incentrato sulla figura di Lecter dagli 8 anni alla prima adolescenza. L’ultimo capitolo della saga è invece Hannibal (2001) di Ridley Scott, ambientato 7 anni dopo le vicende de Il Silenzio degli Innocenti.

Fuller ha spiegato l’originalità dello spunto che caratterizza la serie: “se alla base c’è il principio caro a Hitchcock di far vedere una bomba sotto il tavolo e far tremare gli spettatori in attesa dello scoppio, quella che si instaura tra Hannibal e Graham potremmo definirla una ‘storia d’amore’, due universi che s’incontrano partendo da poli opposti e che finiscono per attrarsi. Non è un caso che Lecter ricordi a Graham di essere più simili di quello che il serial-profiler possa immaginare…”. “La curiosità che emerge – prosegue Fuller – non è tanto nella risoluzione dei casi, quanto nella modalità di coppia che porterà ad essa, scoprendo indagine dopo indagine un tassello di entrambi i protagonisti, i quali si riveleranno ognuno con aspetti sorprendenti tali da non permettere mai la classica etichettatura del Bene e del Male”.

Mads Mikkelsen di Copenhagen, salito alla popolarità quale antagonista di James Bond in Casino Royale (2006) e fresco vincitore quale “miglior attore” al Festival di Cannes 2012 per il film Il Sospetto (nel quale interpreta un presunto pedofilo accusato dalla società prima che dalla legge), è entrato con la sua caratterizzazione nell’olimpo della critica americana, oltre che eletto icona di stile (l’ultimo numero di “GQ” Usa gli ha dedicato un ampio servizio fotografico nelle vesti di neo-dandy). Per la cronaca, non si tratta del suo debutto assoluto in una serie tv: nel 2000 ha partecipato alla serie poliziesca danese Rejseholdet.

David Tennant di Doctor Who è stato contattato in un primo tempo per il ruolo di Hannibal. Originariamente la parte dell’analista di Lecter doveva andare a Angela Lansbury, aka La Signora in giallo; quando l’attrice ha declinato l’offerta per impegni teatrali, la figura di Du Maurier è stata riscritta per Gillian Anderson, abbassandone l’età.

Memorabile il cameo di Lance Henriksen nel telefilm, colui che aveva interpretato il serial-profiler Frank Black in Millennium (1996), anch’egli in grado di “vedere” nelle menti dei serial-killer. Tra le altre guest-stars, sfila Eddie Izzard.

Oltre a Fuller, firmano da produttori esecutivi Jesse Alexander, Chris Brancato, Martha De Laurentiis, Sidonie Dumas, Katie O’Connell, Christophe Riandee, Elisa Roth, David Slade e Sara Colleton. La colonna sonora degna dei Muse è composta da Brian Reitzell.

Per le buone forchette del caso, i titoli originali della prima stagione riguardano piatti di portata in lingua francese (Apéritif, Amuse-Bouche, Potage, Oeuf…). La produzione si è avvalsa altresì di un consulente culinario visti i continui richiami sulla buona cucina.

Mads Mikkelsen e Hugh Dancy avevano già lavorato sullo stesso set, nel film King Arthur (2004); leggenda vuole che sia stato proprio Dancy a raccomandare Mikkelsen alla produzione. Le riprese sono avvenute nell’Ontario canadese.

Se Brian Lowry di “Variety” ha commentato che “la serie è una bistecca cotta alla perfezione, al sangue, la più gustosa da assaporare in tv negli ultimi tempi”, Tim Goodman di “Hollywood Reporter” ha sentenziato: “una delle migliori sorprese della stagione, girata con maestria tra le tenebre dell’animo umano con uno stile per niente ortodosso, dove Mikkelsen non ha nulla da invidiare a Hopkins”. Proprio sul confronto con Il Silenzio degli innocenti si è soffermato anche Mike Hale del “New York Times”: “Mikkelsen è così meravigliosamente inespressivo da apparire l’anti-Hopkins”.

Nonostante il realismo di alcune scene, in patria il network generalista NBC – che ha rinnovato la serie per una seconda stagione in cui potrebbe comparire niente popò di meno che David Bowie nei panni dello zio di Hannibal – non ha mai chiesto modifiche alle sceneggiature. Tranne in un caso. Nel quinto episodio un serial-killer “sbuccia” le vittime e le mette in posa da angeli. Le inquadrature dei loro deretani sono apparse offensive ed è stato chiesto alla produzione di coprirli con il…sangue.

“Sostanzialmente è una storia d’amore con una bomba pronta ad esplodere sotto il tavolo”.
