The 43-year-old Modern Family actress opened up about having children with her new husband Joe Manganiello, being a single mom while she paved her way in Hollywood and her thoughts about feminism. See what she had to say:

On having children with Joe: “Well, I don’t think you can think about it seriously when you’re already 43 years old. It is what it is and I cannot just expect anything natural any more. So we’ll see what happens. It’s not something that doesn’t let us sleep. But it’s not something I am completely opposed to.”

On being a single mom while forging a career path: It’s not something I chose consciously, it’s just something that happened in my life. Now that I look back, I never really needed the help of anyone. Of course I had help, my manager and my agent, but not really someone that was a husband or a boyfriend. So yeah, it does feel great to look back and know I’ve done it all by myself. It’s rewarding. Not that there’s anything wrong with a man taking care of you and helping you.”

On whether she considers herself a feminist: “Umm… I’m in the middle ground. As a Latin woman, I love having a husband, someone to be there waiting for me, supporting me. I don’t see anything bad with getting help from somebody that loves you and treats you well. That’s an amazing job and a lot of effort to do it right. I think the beauty of a woman nowadays is that we can do everything. We have more options and we should do everything we can. But why not have support and love? And if somebody can help you in any way, why not take the help?”

On having a baby with Joe Manganiello: “Joe is younger than me. He’s 38. He’s never had kids. How am I going to say no? I tell him if we’re going to do this, we have to do it, like, now, because I don’t want to be 50 with a baby.”
On knowing Joe was the one: “I finally realized that relationships don’t need to be so much work. Ever since we met, it’s been so easy. I’m very suspicious. I’m like, ‘It’s not normal that we’ve been together for nine months and we haven’t had a big fight or anything.’”
On what she’s learned about men: “I have learned that I have to let them be men. I think it’s very important not to try to take over on everything – even if you think you can do it easier or better. If you don’t let them do things, you create a cycle and then you complain that they never do anything.”

On fiance Joe Manganiello: “The day that I sent the press release [announcing the breakup with Nick Loeb], Joe immediately contacted Jesse Tyler Ferguson [Modern Family’s Mitchell Pritchett], like, Please, please, please tell her I want her number. And I’m like, Jesse, no, he’s too handsome. Then, after two days of Jesse trying to convince me, I’m like, O.K., give him my number. I’m thinking, I’m in New Orleans shooting, and he’s in L.A. Nothing’s going to happen. But we started talking a lot, and then he showed up in New Orleans. Since then we’ve been inseparable. There’s nothing about him I’d change other than the fact that he’s four years younger than me.”
On her accent: “I hired the speech coach, and you have to work so much. It’s exhausting. It’s also boring. And I have a bad ear, you know? I’ve been in this country for 20-something years and I still sound like this..So I was going to auditions and the only thing I could focus on was the position of the tongue. I was not acting. And then I thought, If I can’t get a job with my accent, this is not a job for me.”
On her body: “My boobs are, like, huge. My whole life, buying a bra was a nightmare. What I used to do when I moved to L.A., I found places like Frederick’s of Hollywood that make bras for [strippers]. Believe me, I wish I had fake boobs. I lay down and they completely go down like all the way, like here. It’s not fun.”

On working with Russell Crowe in Noah: “It’s only a small part but if you’d have told me five years ago I’d be working with Russell I wouldn’t have believed you. He’s fantastic he gave me some good tips.”
On his life before becoming famous: “I finished on Hollyoaks then I did The Bill and Holby City which was fun. I knew my next job had to be something cutting edge because of the stigma that unfairly is tied to soaps. I did a theatre production of Jerusalem and it was so successful it went to the West End and then Broadway. It was like a golden ticket.”

On going to the gym: “There are so many things that are out of your control in this business, and I think in life in general. And one of the things that I really do have in my control is how hard, how much effort I put into the gym. There’s really nothing else on the planet – nothing that I’ve come across – that gives you as much back as you put in as the gym does.”
On being committed to his work: “Talent is such an objective thing; it’s up for opinion, and it’s up for interpretation. And the one thing that’s not is work ethic. I think that’s probably just from growing up in Pittsburg, coming from where I did, and in that part of the world, you work hard. I come from very hard working people, and I know the value of a dollar. So if someone’s going to pay me a certain amount of money to do something, then I’m going to work my ass off. Especially playing a supernatural creature – I think [Alcide] should look that way. As a kid watching all those movies and reading comic books, the chance for me to play a supernatural character…I want him to look right.”

On the final season of his hit show True Blood: “This is the first season that I actually don’t know what’s in store for me or anyone else on the show. I didn’t ask. I usually have lunch with whoever the show runner is before the season starts. I would always call them up, wanting to know. But this year I think I want to be surprised. I have theories, you know, but I don’t know anything for sure.”

On being focused on his body as an actor: “There’s the triangle – the mind, body, and spirit. And all too often I see actors really work the mental and spiritual side but not put anything into the physical side, they just kind of ignore it. I don’t come from that school. I come at it in ancient Greek sense, in that their culture was built on athletics and on philosophers.

On his mentality in the gym: “My training is obviously about weightlifting and building muscle, but it’s also about remaining athletic. It’s about building the body, but it’s also about teaching your body to adjust to its own weight, especially as you get bigger. And it’s practical. I come from Pittsburgh, and the people in the gym in Pittsburgh aren’t working out to look good because they’ve got a shoot coming up. They’re working out because they want to be stronger, because it helps them in life.”
