TV programmers frustrated that shows watched on tablets and smartphones have been invisible to Nielsen’s ratings may finally get a solution — next year.
Next week, Nielsen will formally announce to clients a timetable for a long-awaited development: In September 2014, the firm is aiming to be able to attribute linear TV viewed on smartphones and tablets to its National TV ratings.
The approach, the culmination of more than three years of work, will for the first time provide a single, consistent measure of live programming viewing across both TV and digital, according to the firm. That could solve a problem that has vexed TV nets and marketers: Today, there’s no satisfactory way to harmonize data about video content and advertising viewed on TV, online, mobile and other platforms.
“Networks are starving for a number they can publish that really represents their audience not just on TV but across all platforms,” said Eric Solomon, Nielsen’s senior VP of global audience measurement. “I think it will start changing the narrative that ‘people are not watching TV shows.’ It’s that they’re watching on different platforms.”
The new Nielsen capability means live television streamed through such apps as ABC’s WatchABC, as well as on iPad video apps from cable operators, can now be counted toward the total numbers on which programmers get paid by TV advertisers.
Viacom Media Networks chief research officer Colleen Fahey-Rush is taking a wait-and-see attitude.
“They have a lot to deliver,” she said, who describes Nielsen as “kind of like the bad boyfriend who keeps letting you down but you can’t break up with him, because he’s the only boy in the whole school.”
In tandem, Nielsen is working to deliver Digital Program Ratings, which measure consumption of TV content online delivered without the national commercials (replaced with digitally inserted online ads), in the first quarter of next year. The firm announced a pilot of Digital Program Ratings in April that includes participation from ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, A&E, CW, Discovery, Univision and AOL.
“What we’re trying to do is bring a lot of the TV model to the digital world,” said Solomon. “This will find Nielsen-coded content on any platform.”
The Digital Program Ratings data uses the same methodology as Nielsen’s Online Campaign Ratings service, which is based on about half of homes in its National People Meter panel (about 10,000 households that also have agreed to let the company monitor their online consumption). To glean age and gender data and cross-reference that with the viewing numbers, Nielsen cut a pact with Facebook, which has about 179 million monthly active users in the U.S.
The two Nielsen digital initiatives support both linear TV and digital ad models, according to Solomon. “A key learning for us was that no two clients are approaching this question of distribution in the same way — they need flexibility to choose the monetization model they use,” he said.
Do the Nielsen efforts go far enough? Industry observers are encouraged by the projects, calling them steps in the right direction, but said they’re not a panacea.
“The fact that (incorporating mobile viewing into TV ratings) is still a year off shows we’re not moving at the speed that marketers and consumers are,” said David Cohen, chief media officer for ad agency Universal McCann.
About the grumbling that Nielsen has taken far too long to progress in this area, Solomon said the company can’t unilaterally alter its national TV ratings given the billions of dollars in advertising sold based on the data. “Any change to that is thought through and analyzed to death, and that’s one of the reasons why this seems to take so long,” he said.
In the absence of action by Nielsen, several programmers have placed bets on other research initiatives. Perhaps the most ambitious is ESPN’s hybrid Project Blueprint, which the sports cabler began testing in February.
It is based on comScore’s services tracking 1 million PCs and 14,000 mobile devices, combined with data from 4.5 million cable set-tops. To that, Project Blueprint layers in data from Arbitron’s 70,000 Portable People Meter, to add radio exposure and a cross-reference of television. Finally, in the critical linchpin, the data uses a single-source “calibration panel” of 2,000 PPM users that provides a reality check across all media — TV, online, mobile and radio.
“Our message is, this thing works and it works extremely well,” said Artie Bulgrin, ESPN’s senior vice president of research and analytics. “The cross-platform data we see is very logical to us. It is a badly needed layer of quantitative data that the industry desperately needs to understand net reach across platforms over an extended period of time.”
ESPN wants to use Project Blueprint to conduct real business. At its 2014 upfront next spring, it plans to present a full year of usage data showing its cross-platform reach for programming including the NFL, NBA and college football and basketball seasons. Based on initial results this summer, ESPN digital properties provide a reach lift of 18% for adults — and 23% for men — over the reach of the TV networks alone.
“I think it could very well be ‘the’ answer, and if it isn’t it’s pretty close to it,” Bulgrin claimed.
Aside from ESPN, however, nobody else is using Project Blueprint today and the methodology still awaits industry vetting. Another potential hitch is that Nielsen is in the midst of acquiring Arbitron, pending regulatory review, and it’s possible Nielsen may decide to not continue to participate in Project Blueprint.

Wait a gosh darn second—was that a nipple?!
Glee star Naya Rivera's debut single, "Sorry," which features her rapper boyfriend, Big Sean, hit iTunes today, and along with that release came the kinda NSFW lyric video for the track (lyric videos are all the rage these days). However, it takes a couple of seconds to realize that the actress turned singer's sorry-I'm-not-sorry anthem is actually pretty racy!
At first, all you see is a black background with the words to the song appearing in white, and you might think to yourself, "Really? Three and a half minutes of this?"
LOOK: Naya Rivera on the cover of Latina magazine

Then you get a flash of a collarbone or a belly button or bare breasts and you come to the realization that the lyrics are being flashed over the silhouettes of women's naked bodies. Whaaaaat?!
And suddenly, you're paying extra-close attention to the video. Kudos, Naya. Kudos.
By the end of it, the viewers watch as nearly a handful of ladies in their birthday suits participate in a dark dance party.
Rivera was nowhere to be seen in the lyric video, but she recently showed a little bit of skin herself (not as much as these girls, don't get excited).
The brunette beauty posed with her beau for celeb photographer Terry Richardson, who shared a bunch of the pictures on his Twitter. It's not clear what the purpose behind the photo shoot was, but Rivera's wearing the same outfit as the cover art for the single, which she posted on her Twitter page.
In one of the super-sexy shots, Naya is standing next to Big Sean wearing black sneakers, itty-bitty shorts and a tiny black crop top that flaunts her amazingly toned abs and some major under boob.
Just going out on a limb here, but we're guessing she's not sorry about it.

L’attrice-ballerina canadese Kristin Lehman, già vista in “The Killing”, interpreta Angie Flynn, la detective protagonista.

L'EDICOLA DI LOU - Stralci, cover e commenti sui telefilm dai media italiani e stranieri

AVVENIRE
A qualunque costo".

Oltre a Fuller, firmano da produttori esecutivi Jesse Alexander, Chris Brancato, Martha De Laurentiis, Sidonie Dumas, Katie O’Connell, Christophe Riandee, Elisa Roth, David Slade e Sara Colleton.

A Chicago c’è chi gioca col fuoco.

Double double, toil and trouble…..
American Horror Story:Coven will begin brewing on Wednesday, Oct. 9, it has been officially announced by FX.

Exec producer Tim Minear revealed earlier this month that Coven will have “a feminist theme” as well as cover ”race and oppression and family … along with laughs and scares and a few tears.”
On the aforementioned family front, Jessica Lange will play a literally witchy mom to Sarah Paulson. It’s also been revealed that Angela Bassett is playing Marie Laveau, a character loosely based on “a woman in the 1800s who was very influential in the city,” while Kathy Bates will channel infamous 1830s New Orleans socialite/serial killer Madame LaLaurie.

Also on board for Coven are returning Horror Story players Denis O’Hare, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, Alexandra Breckenridge, Evan Peters and Taissa Farmiga, as well as new blood Emma Roberts, Patti LuPone and Gabourey Sidibe.

Four haunting teasers for the new Horror Story chapter — including the new one, “Stakes” are posted below:

HOLLYWOOD
E se "Orange is the New Black" fosse il nuovo "Lost"?
"Two episodes into Orange Is the New Black and you'll already start to entertain comparisons to another old favorite. Not Weeds, although Jenji Kohan's new exploit does remind us fondly of how great the Showtime dramedy was when it started off, but Lost. Yes, just like every other high concept hour-long program that has come out since 2010, The New Black has already earned prospective connotation as the new Lost.
And it's clear why — star Taylor Schilling finds herself stuck in an isolated, strange, nearly uninhabitable location, surrounded by a collection of odd strangers, many with whom she struggles to coexist, each of whom have their own stories. Starting in the second episode, these other stories begin to unfold. In the form of flashbacks.
Yes, although we spend most of our time with Schilling's white collar Piper Chapman, serving a 15-month sentence after running some drug money with an old girlfriend more than a decade back, we do get a few glimpses into the pasts of her friends and foes in the prison — learning, in many a case, why and how these women found themselves behind bars.
You know, just like Lost. If you replace "prison" with island," and "behind bars" with "aboard a plane from Sydney to L.A.," and "women" with "people." You get the idea.
Lost devotees will surely be hesitant to sign onto Orange as a Dharma Initiative substitute. After all, this is just a goofy class system satire about some rich lady who goes to jail, right? Where's the time travel? Where's the smoke monster? Where's the boat that may or may not belong to Penny?
They're all in there. Okay, not literally, but they might as well have not been literally in Lost either. Everything on the ABC drama served entirely as a catalyst for the central goal: get these people in the same place. Learn about them. Teach one another about them. Show them, and us, that the only thing of importance is the fact that they are together.
Unfortunately, not everybody saw it this way, which is what has rendered Lost a failure in certain eyes. "What about the answers?" people ask, unwilling to accept that the only answer the show ever meant to deliver is that we don't need, and can never know, all the answers. We just need each other.
And that seems to be what Orange is up to as well. It's got its share of smoke monsters and polar bears: manipulative guards, doorless bathroom stalls, inedible food (don't tell Red I said that!). All ghosts that haunt the island of Litchfield, while the varied Flight 815 passengers — and Others! — are just trying to survive until their 108 days are up. But along the way, we have a feeling that these women will come to abide by that age old Shephardian maxim: live together, die alone".

L'EDICOLA DI LOU - Stralci, cover e commenti sui telefilm dai media italiani e stranieri

VULTURE
"Showbiz bible Variety led its first take on today's Emmy nominations with the fact that Netflix had scored a historic breakthrough, and this is as it should be. This is a milestone, one that will almost certainly be cited by historians when chronicling the collapse of linear television about, oh, seven years from now. By ignoring how House of Cards and Arrested Development and Hemlock Grove got to viewers, and instead focusing on the content of those three sMad Men); the Best Comedy nod for Louie (the first time a basic cable network has squeezed into this category); and the inclusion of Yahoo and Funny or Die in a short-form category, which also includes the Super Bowl halftime show and Adult Swim's Childrens Hospital. "What this shows is that disruption can come from anywhere in our business," Sundance Channel chief Sarah Barnett told Vulture. "It can come from the nature of the platform or from a small network you wouldn't have expected to be a contender. In the end, great content wins out."
hows, Emmy voters demonstrated, and admirably so, that they're platform agnostic. Academy members proved this with other nominations as well: the ten nods dished out to Sundance Channel (a network even more obscure than its sister station AMC, pre–
Barnett is right, of course: Today's nominations are a nice demonstration of progressiveness from a voting bloc that, just a decade ago, somehow failed to award a single nomination to The Wire, a series considered by many to be TV's greatest ever. And yet, look more closely at most of the "breakthrough" nominations revealed today, and something else quickly becomes clear: Emmy voters may be okay with alternative distribution methods, but they're still very much in love with Big Names. Star power remains Emmy's everything.
It takes nothing away from Netflix or House of Cards to point out that its biggest nominations were for people who have been nominated  for (or have won) Oscars and Golden Globes: Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, and David Fincher. Sure, it's historic that their nominations were for a show which didn't air on a "network," but it is otherwise not at all surprising that these very well-known talents woke up to good news this morning. It is equally not a shock that the lesser-known actor Corey Stoll, who delivered House of Cards's most unexpected and searing performance, was overlooked. But Emmy's obsession with well-known names played out in other arenas as well:
• Sundance's Top of the Lake is certainly deserving of the Emmy love it got, but so was the network's Rectify, which got almost identical critical acclaim. The difference between the two: One starred Emmy vet Elisabeth Moss and was co-written by Oscar winner Jane Campion, and the other hailed from relative unknowns. (The good news for Barnett: Rectify will make it on many critics' year-end lists of best shows, and the fact that it's even being discussed as a "snub" is victory of itself, given how relatively small Sundance is.)
• Tatiana Maslany, star of BBC America's Orphan Black, had the backing of every single person on Twitter and countless critics. Anyone who's stunned that the Canadian actress didn't get a nominated today hasn't been paying attention to Emmys.
• Those nominations for Yahoo and Funny or Die in the short-form programming category sound less impressive when you see who's attached to them: Ben Stiller (for Burning Love) and Zach Galifianakis (Behind Two Ferns). The nonfiction counterpart of the same category is equally dominated by stars, including Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno.
• Comedy Central has had a great year reinventing sketch comedy with shows such as Key & Peele, Inside Amy Schumer, and Nathan For You. Did any of them displace long-in-the-tooth veterans Stewart, Colbert, Maher, or SNL in the variety categories? Of course not, because none of the people on those shows is currently a star. (Portlandia is nominated, but it co-stars SNL veteran Fred Armisen and is executive produced by Lorne Michaels.)
• Political Animals scored five nominations, and for those of us who really liked the show's soapy shenanigans, that's nice. But let's not pretend that the presence of Hollywood icons Sigourney Weaver and Ellyn Burstyn didn't make all the difference. While it helped that the miniseries category is less crowded than drama, there are lots of talented actors on Scandal who didn't get nominated because, unlike the amazing Kerry Washington (who deservedly did get recognized), those actors just aren't very well-known.
This year's Emmy star fetish is nothing new, but, to the Academy's credit, neither is it absolute. Academy members absolutely do step up to reward performers and writers who are unknown; Mad Men alone is proof of how unknown actors and first-time showrunners can become overnight Emmy sensations. Glee and Modern Family also broke through instantly, and last year, some dude named Max Greenfield was nominated for comedy acting in New Girl (sadly, he was overlooked today). But here's a troubling thought (and it's just a thought, not a prediction): With so many more outlets now doing really good TV, and with Netflix opening the doors to even more platforms for good content, what if it becomes harder than ever for amazing TV performances to tally enough votes to get nominated? "It's such a cluttered marketplace," one Hollywood insider notes. "What really cuts through in terms of the Academy, what gives you a leg up is if your talent has some sort of profile or recognition. It's naive to think otherwise."
There's nothing wrong with big stars or high-profile writers racking up nominations, of course — particularly when the finished product is as good as Top of the Lake or House of Cards. And networks such as FX and Sundance and Comedy Central will continue to make highly watchable, groundbreaking shows, and those networks will continue to thrive, whether their wares get Emmy's blessing or not. What's more, it's important to remember that often it just takes time for Emmy voters to come around to a show or an actor. Be bummed, as we are, about the shut-out of The Americans or the criminal neglect of Tatiana Maslany, but then remember this: While Louis C.K. got nominated the first year he was eligible, Louie was kept out of the Best Comedy category for three years. Today, as writer Noah Hawley tweeted, Louis C.K. snagged seven total Emmy nominations for an "existential comedic experiment. Moral: You thought there were rules? There [are] no rules." Well, except maybe one: It's still a whole lot easier to get an Emmy nomination if everybody already knows your name".
