Ladies, get your spending money ready: American Gigolo is getting a TV reboot on Showtime. The 1980 film that made Richard Gere a star is being developed into a drama series, according to our sister site Deadline. Paramount TV and Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original Gigolo film, are behind the reboot; playwright Neil LaBute will write the pilot. (The film’s writer/director, Paul Schrader, is on board as an executive consultant.)
American Gigolo starred Gere as high-end male escort Julian Kaye, who enjoys the superficial L.A. lifestyle before getting entangled with a politician’s wife (Lauren Hutton) — and a murder case. The film put Gere on the Hollywood map two years before An Officer and a Gentleman… and featured a notorious shot of full-frontal male nudity. (And since the reboot is on pay-cable, we might be seeing more of that.)
Gigolo is the latest movie-to-TV reboot for Paramount TV and Bruckheimer; ABC snatched up their remake of the Will Smith movie Enemy of the State last month.
