Finally, our reward for dealing with that unsettling news about Jason Schwartzman potentially starring in a big-screen Trolls adaptation: a Barbarella
television series! After securing the rights to the iconic sci-fi
heroine/sexpot, Gaumont International Television and producer Martha De
Laurentiis announced the small-screen reboot today. The project will
center on the comic character made famous by Jane Fonda in the
controversial 1968 film adaptation directed by Fonda’s then husband,
Roger Vadim. Martha De Laurentiis, the widow of the film’s producer Dino
De Laurentiis, has partnered with Drive director Nicolas Refn to tackle the project. After underperforming at the box office, Barbarella has since gained a cult following and was rumored to be remade in 2008 with Robert Rodriguez directing and Rose McGowan set to star.
Since her 60s feature debut, the counter-culture character has inspired
the band
Duran Duran (named after the film’s villain, Dr. Durand
Durand), an Austrian musical, a German hybrid rocket, and a pervasive
interest in gravity-defying hairstyles.
