"Supernatural" actor Jared Padalecki caused a stir when he tweeted that Philip Seymour Hoffman's death was "stupid" and "senseless" as opposed to sad.
Hoffman, 46, was found dead on the bathroom floor of his New York City apartment Sunday (Feb. 2) of an apparent drug overdose, law enforcement sources told CNN. He was reportedly found with a needle in his arm and empty glassine-type bags, typically used to hold heroin.
After news of the Oscar winner's death broke, celebrities like Ricky Gervais, Aaron Paul, Jim Carrey and Mia Farrow tweeted their condolences for the beloved actor. But Padalecki had a different take on Hoffman's tragic passing.
"'Sad' isn't the word I'd use to describe a 46-year-old man throwing his life away to drugs. 'Senseless' is more like it. 'Stupid,'" he wrote in the since-deleted tweet, according to Jezebel.
After some pushback, Padalecki clarified his stance.
Hoffman's drug addiction dated back to his early twenties. In 2006, he told CBS he entered rehab when he was just 22 years old because he feared for his life.
"I have so much empathy for these young actors that are 19 and all of a sudden they're beautiful and famous and rich," he told CBS. "I'm like, 'Oh my God. I'd be dead.' You know what I mean? I'd be 19, beautiful, famous and rich. That would be it," he told Steve Kroft. "I think back at that time. I think if I had the money, that kind of money and stuff. So, yeah [I would have died]."
Last May, Hoffman checked into a drug detox facility for 10 days after falling off the wagon. A year prior to that, he began using prescription drugs and eventually turned to using heroin.
He is survived by his longtime partner, Mimi O'Donnell, and his three children: Tallulah, 7; Willa, 5; and Cooper, 10.
I didnt mean PSH is stupid or that addiction isnt a reality. I simply meant I have a different definition of "tragedy".

When I think "tragedy", I think of St Judes, of genocide, of articles I read in the paper. But, yes, either way, a death, is sad.
