Glen Mazzara, the ousted showrunner of The Walking Dead, is in negotiations to pen the screenplay to what is being called Overlook Hotel, the prequel to Stephen King’s horror classic The Shining. For Mazzara, the project marks his first gig since he exited as showrunner on AMC's Walking Dead. The prolific producer, whose small-screen credits also include Crash and The Shield, recently signed a a TV development deal with Fox Television Studios to develop cable projects under his new banner, 44 Strong Productions. Under his oversight, The Walking Dead became TV's No. 1 scripted series in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic. The Shining was set in a haunted hotel named the Overlook, and the prequel will look at what transpired there long before struggling author Jack Torrance brought his family there and went crazy.

After fielding interest from multiple networks, Open, the racy new drama spec from Glee and American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy, has gone toHBO, which has given it a pilot order. Casting is expected to begin shortly for filming in the fall. Open, which Murphy co-wrote with Dexter co-executive producer Lauren Gussis, is described as a modern, provocative exploration of human sexuality and relationships. It hails from Fox 21, the cable division of 20th Century Fox TV, where Murphy is under a rich overall deal. This marks the first project at HBO for 20th TV/Fox21, whose maiden project at fellow premium cable network Showtime was the Emmy-winning drama Homeland. “Gary (Newman), Bert (Salke) and I have been looking for the right opportunity to be in business with HBO for awhile, and this show represents the exact right opportunity,” said 20th TV chairman Dana Walden. “Its provocative storytelling and Ryan’s trademark production values and rich, layered characters make it a perfect fit for the HBO brand.”

Open expands HBO’s relationship with Murphy, where he is directing a passion project of his, the film adaptation of Larry Kramer’s celebrated Broadway play The Normal Heart. It is through that movie that HBO president Michael Lombardo got to know Murphy and observe his talent first-hand. Then he got the call from 20th TV and was given the Open script. “I was hooked,” Lombardo said. “I think it is a perfect marriage of an idea and execution. This is an area we’ve been talking about doing something in for some time, and Ryan did it in a way that is enormously engaging. We’re thrilled doing this project with him, Dana and Gary.”

Open revolves around five lead characters, including a married couple of thirtysomethings, the husband’s male co-worker and a woman in her 40s who is a yoga professional. Murphy said he had been bouncing ideas about a show exploring human relationships when Dante Di Loreto of his company, Ryan Murphy Prods, heard about Gussis working on a similar project and put them together. “She was great fresh voice and energy,” Murphy said about combining his efforts with Gussis. The two worked on the script in December, marking the first time Murphy had written a project on spec instead of selling a pitch. As for the spec landing at HBO: “I’m thrilled about it,” Murphy said, noting his great relationship with Lombardo through Normal Heart and calling HBO a perfect home for Open. “They have great projects, and this is really an adult show that is very frank in its depiction of sex.” But that depiction never feels gratuitous, 20th TV chairman Newman adds. “It is a very honest exploration of relationships and intimacy, and the sex feels organic to the subject matter,” he said.

HBO previously tackled the subject of relationships and sexuality with Tell Me You Love Me, though I hear Open takes a completely different approach. “It is a challenge how do talk about relationships and monogamy without feeling navel-gazing and neurotic, and (Murphy and Gussis) figured it out,” Lombardo said.

For Murphy, Open adds to an already full plate that includes three series on the air, which he co-created and executive produces: Fox’s Glee, FX’s AHS and freshman NBC comedy New Normal. A fifth-season renewal for Glee is pending, and Murphy just unveiled that the upcoming third installment of AHS will be titled American Horror Story: Coven and will star Kathy Bates in addition to Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Taissa Farmiga. Additionally, CAA-repped Murphy is working on Normal Heart for HBO, with Julia Roberts and Mark Ruffalo starring.

Walden vouched full support for Murphy and is not worried by his enormous workload. “He’s demonstrated over and over that he is capable of handing volume in an extraordinary way,” she said. Gussis, repped by CAA and Circle Of Confusion, also worked on ABC’s Once Upon A Time. Fox 21′s slate includes the Emmy-winning Homeland for Showtime; FX’s Sons Of Anarchy; A&E’s Those Who Kill; and the FX pilot Tyrant, from Howard Gordon, Gideon Raff, and Craig Wright, which recently tapped Ang Lee as director.

As AMC‘s Breaking Bad is heading into its final eight-episode run this summer, the network and series producer Sony TV are exploring keeping the franchise alive with a spinoff series centered on one of Breaking Bad‘s most recognizable supporting characters, Bob Odenkirk‘s unflappable criminal lawyer Saul Goodman. There are no deals in place yet as the project is in its nascent stages, but I hear it is being conceived by Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and series writer-producer Peter Gould, who created the Saul character together for a Season 2 episode written by Gould. In the episode, titled “Better Call Saul“, Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) hire the flamboyant Goodman after Badger (Matt L. Jones) is caught by the DEA. Goodman, who has been a regular presence on the show since, is a sleazy but highly competent criminal lawyer with a penchant for over-the-top TV commercials in which he uses his signature tagline “Better Call Saul!” Saul has served as Breaking Bad‘s comic relief, which is not surprising given Odenkirk’s strong comedy background. As a result, I hear the potential spinoff is eyed as a comedy, which could be one-hour, but a half-hour format also is being explored.

The idea for the potential spinoff had been gestating for awhile, with Gilligan mentioning it hypothetically in the past. “I would love to see a Saul Goodman spinoff,” he said in a July 2012 interview. “I like the idea of a lawyer show in which the main lawyer will do anything it takes to stay out of a court of law. He’ll settle on the courthouse steps, whatever it takes to stay out of the courtroom. That would be fun — I would like that.”

PICCOLO GRANDE SCHERMO - Quando il cinema va in tackle sulla tv

Strana coincidenza. Scorsa settimana, nello stesso giorno, sono uscite indiscrezioni Usa via tweet che ben due film diventeranno serial televisivi. Martin Scorsese, mica cotiche, tradurrà sul piccolo schermo il suo “Gangs of New York” (2002); i fratelli Coen – mica ciufoli – riprenderanno in mano la sceneggiatura di “Fargo” (1996), probabilmente riportando sul set William H. Macy (attualmente in “Shameless”, la cui 3° stagione inedita è in onda ogni lunedì su Joi). Altro link cine-televisivo dello stesso sangue è quello dei fratelli Wachowski, firmatari della saga di “Matrix”, che hanno firmato e porteranno presto alla luce il progetto fantascientifico “Sense8”. Ha fatto sfracelli d’ascolto, al debutto americano, “Bates Motel”, prequel di “Psycho” con buona pace di Hitchcock; è partito da pochi giorni Oltreoceano “Hannibal”, sorta di chiosa de “Il Silenzio degli innocenti”, e le aspettative sono massime. Il matrimonio spesso sotto-traccia tra cinema e tv non è mai stato così evidente. La prima impressione è che la linfa vitale del piccolo schermo sia un po’ agli sgoccioli, che sia più un’”intrusione” che un volano, che la Settima Arte non sia più quella cacciatrice di talenti tv di un tempo ma che imponga i suoi modelli e le sue icone in una terra non più capace di esportare i suoi frutti oltre i confini tv. Spesso guardandosi indietro – eccezion fatta per i fratelli Wachowski – più che avanti. Paura del futuro anche prossimo venturo? La partita è aperta. Nel calcio, ormai, il cosiddetto tackle scivolato, è praticamente proibito o rischioso. In tv a quanto pare ancora no. (LD)

GOSSIP - Amell gli occhi! Il protagonista di "Arrow" sempre più verso "50 sfumature di grigio": "ho fatto sesso con un...calzino"! 
“Girare una scena di sesso sul set non è solo coreografia. Il sesso non è un tango. C’è la parte coreografata, ma senza passione e spontaneità non funziona. Quello che rende nervosi non è essere circondati dall’intero cast, ma trovare prima la sintonia con la partner e un po’ di ironia. Soprattutto quando indossi solo un calzino…lì”.

Le dichiarazioni di Stephen Amell, neo sex-symbol divenuto popolare in un lampo grazie alla serie tv da record “Arrow” (in onda su Italia 1, lunedì prossimo il quinto appuntamento), sembrano collimare con il futuro che vorrebbe l’attore canadese protagonista maschile dell’atteso film tratto dal best-seller “50 sfumature di grigio”.

Amell si è confessato sul numero di “Chi” in edicola.

“Non ho mai avuto timore o imbarazzo nel mettermi nudo, mostrando il fisico. Così come l’anima, con tutte le mie fragilità”, chiosa l’attore sul settimanale.

Un successo, quello di Amell, in parte dovuto alla sua preparazione “fisica”: “prima di diventare attore insegnavo spinning in palestra – confessa – Conosco i segreti per mantenersi in forma. Ma per interpretare il mio personaggio in ‘Arrow’ ho fatto di tutto e di più, spesso mettendomi alla prova senza controfigura. Ho scoperto muscoli che neanche immaginavo”.

GOSSIP - Aubrey Plaza, l’altra faccia ironica di “Parks and Recreation”

Non solo Amy Poehler. “Parks and Recretation” (su Joi la 5a stagione inedita ogni giovedì) ha più frecce al suo arco di Oliver Queen di “Arrow”. Tra i volti che ti si stampano nella memoria della sit-com più sottovalutata dai media del nostro Paese, sulla scia illuminata dalla Poehler, c’è sicuramente quello di Aubrey Plaza, colei che dà vita alla cinica e apatica April Ludgate. Per interpretare la parte, l’attrice nata con l’arte dell’improvvisazione sulle tavole polverose nei teatri sperimentali, si è ispirata alle sorelle minori Renee e Natalie. Naturalmente vien da immaginarsi come sia stata l’adolescenza della sempre più in vista Plaza, confortata altresì dalla mamma procuratrice di origini anglo-irlandesi e dal babbo consulente finanziario portoricano. Non per niente, a 20 anni, la nostra ha subito un ictus dal quale si è ripresa egregiamente, visto che dopo pochi mesi debuttava in un programma di Candid Camera entrando in un fast food armata di pc con mega-schermo catodico, hard-disk vecchio stampo di 7 chili e tastiera antidiluviana, usando l’armamentario suddetto a mò di notebook tra lo stupore degli astanti. Mentre su Twitter ai quasi 300 mila followers, con l’account @evilhag, proclama “I am a gay man”, Plaza sarà al cinema nel 2013 con le commedie “The To Do List” (al fianco di Rachel Bilson di “The OC” e Connie Britton di “American Horror Story” e “Nashville”) e “A Many Splintered Thing” (con il bonazzo da blockbuster assicurato Chris Evans). 
Non si creda però che Aubrey abbia trovato il successo per caso: vanta un diploma in Cinema e Televisione alla Tish School of Arts di New York, nonchè quelle che la rivista specializzata “Complex” ha definito “le gambe più sexy della tv”. Il mensile le ha sì dedicato la copertina di Marzo, ma al motto “oltre le gambe c’è di più” ha privilegiato lungo il reportage fotografico le doti ironiche dell’attrice di cui sentiremo parlare anche dopo la…ricreazione.

La Barriera di "Game of Thrones" reggerebbe nel mondo reale?
"Forza di gravità batte magia. È questo il parere della scienza rispetto alla Barriera, il grande muro di ghiaccio che protegge i Sette Regni da bruti ed Estranei nella famosa serie televisiva Game of Thrones (la terza stagione inizia in Usa stasera). L'imponente e suggestiva costruzione di ghiaccio, alta 700 metri e lunga quasi 500 chilometri, non avrebbe alcuna possibilità di restare in piedi nel mondo reale: solo la magia, ironizza Wired.com, potrebbe impedire alla parete di collassare, schiacciata dal suo stesso peso.
“Anche a temperature molto basse”, sostiene l'ingegnere Mary Albert dell' Ice Drilling Program Officeal Dartmouth College: “le grandi masse di ghiaccio si deformano sotto il loro peso. Inoltre, su scale temporali lunghe, il ghiaccio tende a muoversi, a scorrere, quindi sarebbe impossibile che il muro mantenesse la sua forma originale per migliaia di anni”. L'idea per la fortificazione è venuta a George R.R. Martin, l'autore de Le Cronache del Ghiaccio e del Fuoco, il ciclo che ha ispirato la serie televisiva, mentre si trovava sul Vallo di Adriano. Martin immaginò una parete molto più grande e poderosa, fatta completamente di ghiaccio e assemblata grazie alla magia.
Nel mondo reale, solo la natura è riuscita a costruire strutture che possono rivaleggiare con il Muro: la Groenlandia, per esempio, o i ghiacci antartici, spessi diversi chilometri. “Tali strutture, però”, continua Albert, “si sono formate nel corso di centinaia di migliaia di anni, in luoghi dove le temperature erano così basse da non consentire lo scioglimento”. Gli esseri umani non sono mai riusciti a fare niente del genere; e, d'altronde, ogni tentativo di costruire una struttura comparabile con la Barriera sarebbe stata una corsa contro il tempo. L'unico modo per bilanciare la deformazione e lo spostamento del ghiaccio, secondo il fisico Martin Truffer, della University of Alaska Fairbanks, sarebbe la costruzione di un muro in pendenza anziché verticale: “Diciamo che un muro alto 700 metri dovrebbe avere uno spessore pari a 40 volte tanto, per restare in piedi”. Piuttosto difficile da costruire. A meno che, naturalmente, non ci si affidi alla magia".
