"Lately on TV, bad guys appear to be having all the fun, with a wave of programs romanticizing — if not quite glorifying — those who do terrible things. Some of TV’s most compelling characters of the current generation have been antiheroes, from Tony Soprano to “Breaking Bad’s” Walter White. Yet the appeal of the dark side looks to be growing, branching beyond the permissive confines of cable to major networks as well. Television often gets an unfair rap regarding violence, with academics and pundits overreaching to make the case for a correlation. That said, there is something unsettling — or just plain icky — about the media and public fascination with figures like real-life cop-turned-killer Christopher Dorner, who upstaged President Obama’s State of the Union address on cable news. In the wake of the Newtown school shooting, critic Roger Ebert quoted from his review of “Elephant,” which placed any media blame for inspiring such mass shootings on news, not drama. All that seems true. Yet there is something distasteful, at the very least, about dramatic programming making killers the cool kids, having the hottest sex and driving the nicest cars.
A brief sampling of the coming weeks finds audiences being asked to
hang around with a young Norman Bates (A&E’s “Bates Motel”) and
Hannibal Lecter (NBC’s upcoming “Hannibal”). They join the suave serial
killer at the heart of Fox’s “The Following,” who always seems to be
several steps ahead of the bedraggled FBI agent on his trail; and the
handsome mob boss who steals scenes, among other things, in ABC’s “Red
Widow.” Heck, even the evil side of NBC’s short-lived Jekyll-and-Hyde
knockoff “Do No Harm” was far more interesting than his good side. To be fair, pity the poor broadcast networks. Put on procedurals
where the good guys where white hats, and they’re accused of boring
cookie-cutter development. Try breaking (or at least stretching) the
mode, and people wonder if they’re not helping breed sociopaths. It’s simplistic to say that focusing on antiheroes glorifies
violence. After all, the willingness to explore moral ambiguity has
yielded some of the best and most provocative shows on TV, from “Dexter”
to “Homeland,” “Breaking Bad” to DirecTV’s “Hit & Miss,” a pleasant
surprise that unearthed unexpected depth from a transgender hitwoman.
Where such portrayals cross into unsavory territory is a matter of
context, and highly subjective. Still, if a show is defined by a
disreputable protagonist who faces opposing forces more depraved and
odious than he or she is, you might be skating on thin ice. For a cinematic example of this, think back to “Hannibal,” Thomas
Harris’ sequel to “The Silence of the Lambs.” The novel and subsequent
movie’s underlying notion was to take the monstrous title character and
essentially promote him to hero, albeit by introducing a hideous
adversary. It’s also worth noting that TV operates somewhat differently than
movies. On the bigscreen, spending time with a morally flawed character
is a one-and-done experience. By contrast, series demand an ongoing
relationship, and while that doesn’t require liking the characters,
viewers do have to care about what happens to them. That’s one reason why something like FX’s “American Horror Story” —
which revels in nastiness for its own sake, offering few redeeming
qualities among its assorted characters — is such a grim, nasty
exercise. Rebooting the show for a second season only exacerbated this
fundamental flaw.
As noted, the preoccupation with criminals — the more outlandish the better — is hardly confined to drama (Investigation Discovery has built a profitable niche around it), and time will determine whether the audience’s appetite is expansive enough to support this latest wave of scripted fare. Nevertheless, casting more evildoers in starring roles does hand ammunition to TV’s cultural critics. Because while it’s easy to say this is nothing new, the sensation is different when TV goes from a couple of empathetic bad guys to one on every channel". (Brian Lowry)

Joss Whedon screened his delightful Shakespeare adaptation "Much Ado About Nothing" at the 2013 SXSW Film Festivalon Saturday afternoon, but during a post-screening question and answer session, one intrepid audience member had little interest in the Bard's tale. Austin resident Peyton McLeod wanted to know if Whedon, the geek master of the universe behind "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," "Firefly" and "Marvel's The Avengers," had ever watched "Lost." "Settle in, people," Whedon said as the audience at the Vimeo Theater inside the Austin Convention Center laughed. Was Whedon about to throw the polarizing series, produced and co-created by fellow geek icon J.J. Abrams, under the bus? "I've never seen it," Whedon said, to some surprise. "I missed out on a lot of culture: you either make TV or you watch it. So, yeah I've never seen it." That doesn't necessarily mean Whedon didn't have at least some awareness about the popular show. "I hear it's really good and then it gets confusing," Whedon said. Fans of "Lost" who spent more than a few hours unpacking origins of the smoke monster are probably nodding in agreement.

It will soon be over for "90210." The CW has decided to cancel the reboot series at the end of its five-season run this spring.
As was first reported by TVLine, the final episode of the series will air on Monday, May 13. The news is not entirely a surprise and fans can expect a great deal of closure from the soap opera when the end comes.
CW president Mark Pedowitz had nothing but praise when commenting on "90210" coming to an end: "The CW has had five great seasons with America's favorite zip code, 90210," he said in a statement quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. "I'd like to thank the talented cast, producers, and crew for all their hard work and dedication to the series. We are very proud of the West Beverly High alumni."
A reboot of the 1990s classic "Beverly Hills 90210," "90210" has had a passionate but unfortunately small following throughout its five years on The CW. Even for the perennially low-rated network, numbers for "90210" have remained modest throughout the show's fifth season: In its most recent airing on Monday, Feb. 25, the show only had 0.58 million viewers and a 0.3 rating for the 18-49 demographic. Even the struggling freshman series, "The Carrie Diaries" -- which airs right before "90210" on Mondays -- had slightly higher ratings.
With this cancellation, one has to wonder if the direction of The CW is permanently changing. "90210" is the second fifth season show canceled during the 2012-2013 regular season, and it is the closest remaining series in tone to that earlier cancellation, "Gossip Girl." With genre series thriving and fashion-heavy "girl" shows struggling, we may be looking at a whole new CW soon.

NEWS - Ciak, si funkizzi! Primo giorno di riprese a Firenze di una serie italiana sui precari (vento nuovo post-elezioni?)
(ANSA) - FIRENZE, 27 FEB - Primo ciak oggi a Firenze di 'Funk-azzisti', la nuova serie tv di Marco Limberti, sulla storia di quattro giovani precari e disadattati che vivono in una casa storica del capoluogo toscano. ''La serie - ha spiegato Matteo Cichero di Ecoframes, tra i produttori - e' attesa da Mediaset e da Sky. E' un progetto pilota che uscira' ad agosto sul web e poi interamente in tv in attesa delle proposte dei due gruppi. Saranno circa 24 gli episodi''. Tutta la serie sara' girata in soggettiva in modo che lo spettatore non vedra' mai in viso il protagonista. La sit-com racconta la vita di quattro inquilini - fatta da scene surreali, sketch e quotidianita' - che abitano in un attico affrescato di Firenze, nella centrale via dei Serragli, ma disastrato a causa delle condizioni in cui vivono. Tra gli interpreti gli attori Giacomo Carolei ('Un medico in famiglia'), Luca Seta ('Un posto al sole'), Niki Giustini ('Gli amici del bar Margherita'), Vincenzo De Caro ('Ricomincio da tre') e Eleonora Cappelletti ('Benvenuti in amore'). La prima parte sara' dedicata alla ricerca di un inquilino che accetti le condizioni in cui vivono. La loro quotidianeta', fatta di precariato e difficolta' sociali, ha un sussulto grazie alla presenza della bellissima vicina di casa (interpretata da Cappelletti) che attirera' quotidianamente le loro attenzioni. ''La troupe - ha spiegato il produttore - e' costituita al 100% da professionisti toscani''. Il pilot della serie tv prende vita dalle case di produzione Ecoframes e Icaroff. E' stato scritto, insieme al regista, dagli autori Riccardo Iacono e Alessio Coluccia.

Anderson will play Susie’s sister Meg, a successful CEO estranged from her sibling thanks to the mutual secret they keep. She also has a three-episode arc on NBC’s upcoming Silence of the Lambs prequel series, Hannibal.

la freccia, arriva "Arrow"! La serie-fenomeno della stagione che ha
entusiasmato la generazione iPad in cerca di un nuovo super-eroe e che ha avuto
il merito di lanciare nell'immaginario (femminile in primis) Stephen Amell
- eletto dal prestigioso "Entertainment Weekly" quale "volto-rivelazione
2012/2013" (e non solo, sospirano le fans di mezzo mondo...) - sfreccia in
esclusiva anteprima su Italia 1 dal 11 marzo in prima serata,
rinnovando l'appuntamento ogni lunedì.

Oliver Queen (Amell) è una sorta di
Robin Hood 2.0. Già playboy bilionario, egli finisce
per cinque lunghi anni su un'isola deserta dopo un naufragio. Tratto in salvo,
il nostro torna a Starling City votandosi alla giustizia per combattere il
crimine sulla scorta di una black-list lasciatagli dal padre prima di morire.
Assumendo l'identità segreta di Incappucciato (Hood in originale, nomen omen),
Queen sfodera quelle abilità fisiche e, soprattutto, la maestria nell'arco,
sviluppate nel suo isolamento quinquennale. Giorno dopo giorno, il giustiziere
Freccia Verde depenna i malvagi dell'elenco paterno eliminandoli o
assicurandoli alla giustizia. Attorno al protagonista gravitano: John Diggle (David
Ramsey), la guardia del corpo di Queen che finisce presto a fare da spalla a
colui che deve proteggere; l'ex fidanzata Laurel (Katie Cassidy) che non
perdona al nostro di aver causato la morte della sorella Sara nel naufragio; la
madre Moira (Susanna Thompson), la quale dopo la morte del marito si è
risposata con Walter Steele (Colin Salmon), il quale ha ereditato la poltrona
di direttore nella compagnia gestita dal padre di Oliver; la sorella minore
Thea (Willa Holland); il miglior amico Tommy (Colin Donnell), figlio del
milionario Malcom Merlyn (John Barrowman); il detective Quentin Lance (Paul
Blackthorne), il padre di Laurel che vuole arrestare il giustiziere per
vendicarsi della morte della figlia e del divorzio dalla moglie.
Il personaggio dalla doppia identità al
centro della serie tv è nato negli albi
della DC Comics nel 1941, ideato da Mort Weisinger e George Papp. In
contemporanea alla trasmissione di Italia 1, i fumetti DC Comics di "Arrow" saranno pubblicati in
Italia da RW-Lion Edizioni a partire
da metà marzo.

Berlanti cura l'adattamento televisivo in compagnia, nelle vesti di
produttori esecutivi, di David Nutter,
Marc Guggenheim e Andrew Kreisberg; Berlanti non è nuovo
alle trasposizioni super-eroiche: è colui che ha portato sul grande schermo il
fumetto Lanterna Verde nel 2011 (un
secondo capitolo è previsto prossimamente); Nutter, regista della
puntata-pilota, ha firmato Smallville
e Supernatural. La colonna sonora è
composta da Blake Neely. Curiosità:
lo skyline che spesso s'intravede nel
serial, è composto da immagini d'archivio di Boston, Philadelphia e della
tedesca Francoforte; le riprese effettive sono state realizzate nella regione
canadese della British Columbia. Tra le guest-stars
si riconosce Kelly Hu.
Per i telefilmologi del caso, il
personaggio di Freccia Verde aveva già
esordito sul piccolo schermo in Smallville,
a partire dalla sesta stagione, interpretato da Justin Hartley. Il link tra Smallville e "Arrow"
non finisce qui: gli esterni della magione della famiglia Queen sono gli stessi
di quella di Luthor nella serie del 2001: è il castello di Hatley situato a
Colwood, nei pressi di Victoria in Canada.
Per i lookologi per caso, rispetto al
fumetto originale dove Freccia Verde sfoggiava un berretto stile Robin Hood,
nella trasposizione attuale Queen è up to
date con un più pratico (e cool)
cappuccio di felpa (naturalmente verde).
A
proposito del serial, Tim Goodman ha scritto su "Hollywood Reporter":
"ci sono azione, duelli, flirt, intrighi, passione, frecce e intrecci
romantici...non c'è bisogno di altro!". Una proiezione ad hoc curata da Italia
1 della prima apparizione di Freccia Verde in Smallville e un episodio inedito della nuova serie "Arrow" è in cartellone sabato 16 marzo a Cartoomics (Fiera Rho-Milano) alle ore 17.00. Maggiori info:
